Chapter 6 - The Locked Gates of Oakwood Manor

The drive back to Oakwood Manor was quiet,

the tires humming against the paved country roads,

as Vivian watched the rolling green hills of Kentucky pass by.

She felt a profound sense of relief,

as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders,

but she knew the battle was far from over.

When she arrived at the estate,

the grand iron gates were locked,

just as she had ordered,

with a private security team guarding the entrance.

She roll down her window,

nodding to the lead guard,

who immediately signaled for the gates to open.

Welcome home,

Miss Whitaker,

he said,

his tone respectful and professional,

we have secured the perimeter as requested.

Vivian thanked him and drove up the long,

tree-lined driveway,

admiring the ancient oaks that had stood there for generations.

This manor was her sanctuary,

the place where her family had lived,

laughed,

and died,

and she would not let Preston desecrate it any longer.

An hour later,

a taxi pulled up to the gates,

and Preston emerged,

his suit rumpled and his face pale with desperation.

He tried to use his security code on the gate keypad,

but the system beeped angrily,

indicating his access had been revoked.

He began to bang on the iron bars,

shouting Vivian’s name,

demanding to be let inside to gather his belongings.

The security guards approached him,

their hands resting near their holstered weapons,

and told him he was trespassing on private property.

My name is on the deed,

Preston screamed,

his voice cracking with rage,

I live here,

this is my house.

One of the guards pulled out a document,

showing him the updated court order Vivian had obtained that morning,

barring him from the premises.

Your belongings have already been packed,

Mr.

Caldwell,

the guard said,

pointing to several large trash bags sitting outside the gate,

you are advised to take them and leave.

Preston looked at the heavy plastic bags,

containing his expensive suits,

his watches,

and his shoes,

all piled carelessly on the dirt road.

It was a pathetic sight,

a stark contrast to the luxurious lifestyle he had enjoyed just hours ago,

and he felt a surge of bitter resentment.

He kicked one of the bags,

tearing the plastic,

and a stream of silk ties spilled onto the dusty ground.

Sloane was still in the taxi,

watching him with a mixture of disgust and fear,

realizing that the man she had ruined her life for was now homeless.

She had envisioned herself living in this manor,

walking through the grand gardens,

and hosting lavish parties for the state's elite.

Now,

she was sitting in a cheap taxi,

watching her lover throw a tantrum on the side of the road,

with nothing to show for her efforts but a stolen hat.

Preston realized he had no choice,

and he began to gather his ruined clothes,

stuffing them back into the torn bag with shaking hands.

He climbed back into the taxi,

glancing up at the distant manor,

swearing that he would make Vivian pay for this humiliation.

But as the taxi drove away,

Vivian watched from her bedroom window,

May you like

sipping a cup of tea,

knowing he had no cards left to play.
