Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup

The next morning,

the corporate headquarters of Whitaker Enterprises was tense,

with whispers echoing through the glass-walled hallways.

The board of directors had been called to an emergency meeting,

and many of them had already seen the news of Preston’s public eviction.

Preston arrived early,

wearing a hastily bought suit that didn't fit quite right,

hoping to rally his allies before Vivian could arrive.

He entered the boardroom,

trying to project confidence,

and sat at the head of the long mahogany table.

Good morning,

gentlemen,

he said,

trying to keep his voice steady,

I’m sure you’ve heard some rumors,

but I assure you,

everything is under control.

The board members looked at him in silence,

their expressions cold and unreadable,

as they waited for the meeting to officially begin.

Before Preston could continue,

the heavy double doors opened,

and Vivian walked in,

accompanied by her legal team and two federal agents.

She did not sit down,

remaining standing at the opposite end of the table,

her presence commanding the room.

This meeting will now come to order,

she said,

her voice carrying an authority that Preston could never match,

and the first item on the agenda is the immediate removal of Preston Caldwell.

Preston stood up,

slamming his hands on the table,

glaring at his wife.

You can’t just remove me,

Vivian,

he shouted,

I have the support of this board,

and I have brought millions in investment to this company.

Vivian gestured to her attorney,

who handed a thick folder to each of the board members,

containing the irrefutable evidence of Preston’s fraud.

Over the past eighteen months,

Mr.

Caldwell has embezzled over five million dollars from the Whitaker Foundation,

the attorney explained,

using shell companies to hide his tracks.

He has also violated federal securities laws,

insider trading regulations,

and his fiduciary duties to this corporation.

The board members began to flip through the pages,

their faces hardening as they saw the transaction records,

the emails,

and the signed authorizations.

One of Preston’s key allies,

a man he had bribed with promises of future promotion,

looked up with an expression of disgust.

Is this true,

Preston,

he asked,

his voice filled with anger,

did you steal from the children's hospital fund?

Preston opened his mouth to lie,

to deny everything,

but the presence of the federal agents made the words catch in his throat.

I...

it was a temporary loan,

he stammered,

I was going to replace the funds as soon as the offshore investments matured.

The lead federal agent stepped forward,

producing a badge and an official arrest warrant,

and he looked at Preston with a cold,

uncompromising gaze.

Preston Caldwell,

you are under arrest for wire fraud,

embezzlement,

and grand larceny,

the agent said,

as he pulled a pair of handcuffs from his belt.

Preston’s face went entirely white,

his knees buckling slightly,

as the reality of his criminal exposure finally became clear.

He looked at Vivian,

pleading with his eyes,

hoping to see some sliver of the woman who had once loved him.

But Vivian only looked back with the cold,

May you like

uncaring eyes of a judge,

as the handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
