Chapter 15 - THE EVICTION NOTICE

While Adrian awaited trial in federal custody, his downtown condominium and personal belongings were subjected to asset forfeiture proceedings.
As the primary secured creditor through the Vale Harbor trust, I had first dibs on liquidating his remaining personal properties to cover unpaid legal settlements and administrative damages.
On a Tuesday morning, Julian Hart and I walked into Adrian’s luxury bachelor pad in downtown Detroit.
Movers were already boxing up designer suits, expensive watches, and imported leather furniture.
The apartment smelled of stale cologne and expensive whiskey—a monument to hollow vanity.
In the master study, an ornate mahogany desk held a stack of unopened mail, mostly collection notices and past-due luxury car invoices.
I picked up a framed photograph of Adrian and me taken during happier, more naive years.
In the picture, I was smiling, holding a bouquet of flowers, completely unaware of the ambition and deceit simmering beneath his charming exterior.
With a quiet motion, I turned the frame face down and dropped it into a cardboard disposal box.
“Mrs. Morgan, all the corporate ledger backups from MorganWell have been securely archived,” Julian reported, stepping into the study with a clipboard.
“The receivership auction for the MorganWell tower is scheduled for next week.
Our acquisition bid is fully funded and uncontested.”
“Good,” I said, running my hand across the polished mahogany surface of the desk.
“Make sure the philanthropic foundation we established in my father’s name takes over the lower three floors for community enterprise.”
“Consider it done,” Julian replied, glancing around the opulent, sterile room.
“It’s remarkable how quickly a false empire collapses when the foundation is exposed.”
“An empire built on lies is never an empire at all, Julian,” I replied softly. “It’s just a temporary stage.”
We walked out of the apartment for the last time, leaving the movers to clear away the remnants of a disgraced life.
As the elevator doors closed, I felt a profound sense of lightness wash over me.

The past was gone.
The future belonged entirely to Vale Harbor.
