Part 71

Winter arrived with a breathtaking suddenness,

transforming the valley overnight into a silent,

pristine wonderland of white snow and glittering ice.

The vines were now bare,

their dark branches dusted with snow,

resembling delicate charcoal drawings against the white hills.

The lake at the edge of our property had frozen over,

its surface a thick sheet of grey,

unmoving glass that reflected the cold sky.

Inside the villa,

the heating systems worked perfectly,

maintaining a warm,

spring-like temperature throughout the entire structure.

I stood at the massive floor-to-ceiling window of the living room,

holding a mug of hot chocolate,

watching the snow fall in thick,

silent flakes.

Khloe came downstairs,

wrapped in a long,

cashmere robe,

her cheeks pink from the morning chill of the upper rooms.

She joined me at the window,

accepting the mug I offered her,

taking a slow,

appreciative sip that sent a wave of warmth through her.

"It looks like time has completely stopped out there,"

she remarked,

her voice capturing the quiet majesty of the winter landscape.

"It has stopped for us,"

I said,

putting an arm around her shoulders,

pulling her close to my side.

"We no longer have to chase the future or escape the past;

we are just living in a continuous,

beautiful present."

Our son appeared at the doorway,

rubbing his eyes,

clutching his favorite stuffed bear in his tiny hand.

He looked out the window,

his eyes widening in utter amazement at the sudden transformation of his green world into white.

He ran forward,

pressing his small hands and nose against the cold glass pane,

letting out a soft,

wondering gasp.

The puppy,

now a strong,

half-grown dog,

joined him,

its tail wagging as it looked at the snow,

sensing the excitement of its young master.

"Can we go outside?"

Khloe asked,

looking at me with a playful,

mischievous glint in her eyes that reminded me of our early days.

"Only if we bundle up completely,"

I smiled,

unable to refuse any request that brought that beautiful look to her face.

We spent the next twenty minutes putting on thick layers of winter gear,

laughing at how round and heavy our son looked in his puffer suit.

When we finally stepped outside,

the crisp,

freezing air hit our faces,

instantaneously waking up every cell in our bodies.

Our son took his first steps into the deep snow,

his boots sinking down with a satisfying crunch,

his laughter ringing out like crystal bells in the silent valley.

We were completely isolated,

completely safe,

May you like

and entirely happy in our private,

frozen kingdom.
