Chapter 16
A sharp crack echoed through the forest,
but it didn't come from Julian's gun.
A blinding light illuminated the clearing,
accompanied by the loud roar of a helicopter overhead.
"Drop your weapon immediately!"
a voice boomed from a loudspeaker.
Federal marshals descended from the trees,
their weapons aimed directly at Julian.
Elena had not waited for Harrison's call;
she had tracked his phone's GPS and sent the tactical team.

Julian looked up in despair,
realizing he was surrounded by overwhelming force.
The pistol fell from his hand,
thudding against the soft earth.
Two marshals rushed forward,
forcing him to the ground and securing his hands behind his back.
As they pulled him up,
Julian glared at Harrison with pure hatred.
"This isn't over,
Harrison!"
he shouted,
his voice cracking as he was led away.
"It is over,
Julian,"
Harrison said quietly,
watching the marshals lead him into the shadows.
"The law always wins in the end."
Elena stepped into the clearing,
her jacket covered in pine needles.
"You are the most reckless attorney I have ever met,"
she said,
though her eyes showed relief.
"I had a good teacher,"
Harrison replied,
offering a rare,
genuine smile.
They walked back together toward the main road,
where police lights flashed against the dark trees.
Harrison climbed into an ambulance,
where a paramedic was checking Khloe and the baby.
Seeing him,
Khloe stood up and wrapped her arms around him,
weeping tears of pure relief.

The baby,
unaware of the danger,
reached for Harrison's tie,
giggling softly.
He held them both close,
feeling the tension finally drain from his body.
The nightmare that had started at the courthouse was finally finished.
The Vance syndicate was broken,
its leaders in chains,
and its assets seized.
They spent the night at a secure hotel downtown,
guarded by federal agents.
For the first time in over a year,
Harrison slept peacefully,
undisturbed by bad dreams.
The next morning,
the sun shone brightly through the window,
warming the room.
Harrison woke up early,
finding Khloe looking out at the city below.
"What will we do now?"
she asked softly,
not turning around.
"We rebuild,"
Harrison said,
joining her at the glass window.
"We build a life where we don't have to look over our shoulders."

"A life defined by our future,
not our past."
He knew his career as a ruthless corporate defender was over.
He wanted something different now,
something meaningful.

He wanted to use his skills to protect people like his sister,
to be a shield for the innocent.
