Chapter 11 - The Ghost Speaks11 -

The live video feed from the Dubai penthouse projected onto the bunker's massive wall monitors, casting an eerie blue light across the metal workstations. Robert Bennett—the man I had mourned, wept over, and buried with full military honors a decade ago—stood in the flesh, looking remarkably unchanged except for a faint, jagged scar running along his left jawline.
My breath hitched in my throat. For three seconds, my mind refused to process the visual data. Dead men don't stand in luxury penthouses in Dubai. Dead men don't orchestrate international arms syndicates from the shadows.
"Robert..." I breathed out, my voice barely audible over the hum of the server racks.
Robert’s cold, familiar smile widened slightly. He stepped closer to the camera, resting his hands casually on the back of Viktor Vance’s leather armchair.
"I have to hand it to you, Laurel," Robert said, his voice carrying the same calm, smooth cadence I had fallen in love with twenty-five years ago in college. "You always were the sharpest intelligence officer in your cohort. I knew the moment Derek called me from Richmond to say you had pinned him to the lawn that our cover in Virginia was completely blown."
"You... you lied to me," I snarled, my voice dropping into a low, venomous growl as the raw fury of a betrayed wife and a mother superseded shock. "You faked your own death? You abandoned your children? You let me raise four kids alone while you were running a criminal syndicate with Viktor Vance?!"
"I didn't abandon anyone, Laurel," Robert replied smoothly, showing not a single shred of remorse. "I simply chose a side where winning actually mattered. The military brass we served under were bureaucrats, paper-pushers bound by rules of engagement that guaranteed failure. Viktor offered vision. He offered power. And most importantly, he offered a future where we didn't have to live on a modest pension in the suburbs."
Viktor Vance chuckled softly from the chair, swirling a glass of amber whiskey before looking up at the camera. "Major Bennett here is one of my most brilliant assets, Lieutenant Colonel," Vance said with a thick European accent. "It’s a shame your tactical curiosity always runs a bit too deep. You really should have stayed retired in Virginia, tending to your garden and baking cookies for your children."
"Shut your mouth, Vance," I snapped, stepping right up to the holographic terminal screen, my eyes locked dead onto the camera lens. "You think hiding behind a screen in Dubai makes you untouchable? I hunted down syndicates when you were still smuggling contraband out of cargo containers in Mogadishu."
"Oh, I have no doubt of your capabilities, Laurel," Robert interrupted, his tone suddenly turning chillingly pragmatic. "That’s why we’re having this conversation instead of sending a hit squad to Richmond. You see, Project Phantom is entering its final operational phase. In less than forty-eight hours, our network is going to execute a simultaneous digital and physical acquisition of five major strategic logistics hubs across the East Coast."
My tactical instincts screamed in alarm. Strategic logistics hubs across the East Coast.
Richmond. Norfolk naval station. Quantico.
"You're targeting home soil," I realized aloud, my blood running cold.
"We're securing our future," Robert corrected calmly. "And you, my dear wife, are going to help us do it."
"In your dreams," I spat.
"Think about your children, Laurel," Robert’s voice dropped into a dark, menacing whisper. "Toby, Chloe, Noah, and little Maya. They’re currently eating breakfast at your mother’s house in Richmond, completely unaware that a quiet little security detail has already surrounded the property. If you try to interfere with Project Phantom, or if you attempt to transmit the decryption keys on that titanium drive to federal command... well, accidents happen every day in the suburbs."

The blood rushed violently to my ears. My children. My mother.
Before I could fire back a reply, the video feed abruptly cut to black, replaced by a flashing red error code: SIGNAL TERMINATED - TRACE FAILED.
