Chapter 13 - The Roof Drop13 -

The stealth helicopter hovered silently just fifty feet above my mother’s house, its specialized rotor blades producing barely more than a soft, rustling hum against the night wind. The darkness swallowed us as we descended onto the shingled roof like ghosts.

I was the first down, gripping my suppressed tactical carbine tightly, boots making zero sound against the asphalt shingles. Three veteran operators dropped in behind me in a swift, synchronized cascade, moving with the terrifying efficiency of men who had spent decades executing high-risk extractions in hostile warzones.

We moved toward the attic access hatch above the master bedroom. I slipped a small tactical cutting tool into the latch, snipped the seal with a silent click, and gently lifted the wooden panel.

The dusty, familiar smell of my mother’s attic filled my nostrils. Down below, through the floorboards and the drywall grates, I could hear the muffled sound of unfamiliar voices speaking in harsh whispers.

"...Boss wants confirmation as soon as the package is secured," a gruff voice echoed up from the hallway below. "If the woman tries any funny business when she lands at Dulles, headquarters gave us the green light to terminate the hostages."

My blood ran instantly cold. They weren't just holding my children as insurance—they were prepared to execute them the moment I made a move.

I signaled to my team with two sharp hand gestures: Breach and clear. Non-lethal takedown on perimeter guards, lethal authorization if children are directly threatened.

We slipped down the attic stairs into the second-floor hallway like shadows. The house was dead quiet except for the ticking of the grandfather clock downstairs.

I crept silently toward the guest room where Toby, Chloe, Noah, and Maya were sleeping. Peering through the cracked door, I saw a masked operative standing near the window with an assault rifle held across his chest, watching the front driveway.

I didn't hesitate. I stepped through the doorway in a blur of motion, closed the distance before he could even turn his head, and drove the butt of my carbine hard into the side of his helmet. The operative slumped silently to the floor, unconscious before he even hit the carpet.

I rushed to the bed. Toby stirred, his eyes snapping open in terror as he saw me standing over him in full tactical gear.

"Mom?" Toby whispered, his voice trembling. "What is happening?"

"Shh, it's okay, sweetie," I whispered fiercely, pressing a finger to my lips while scooping little Maya up into my arms. "I've got you. Stay right here under the covers with your brother and sister. Do not make a sound."

Toby nodded bravely, pulling Chloe and Noah close.

I turned back toward the hallway, signaling my team that the children were secure. Now, it was time to clear the ground floor and deal with the remaining operatives.

As I reached the top of the main staircase, peering down into the living room, I saw two more armed men standing near the front door. And standing right in the center of the living room, holding a encrypted satellite phone and calmly pouring himself a cup of coffee from my mother’s kitchen pot, was a man I never expected to see standing on American soil again.

Robert Bennett.

He had flown in ahead of schedule. The trap was fully set. And he was waiting for me to walk right into it.
