Chapter 5 - The Encryption Protocol5 -

The digital glow of my secure burner phone illuminated the dark hallway as Marcus stayed silent on the other end of the encrypted line for what felt like an eternity. The steady hum of the refrigerator downstairs was the only sound breaking the stillness of my mother’s house.

"Laurel, are you absolutely certain?" Marcus’s voice dropped into a low, clinical whisper that carried the weight of a dozen classified briefings. "If Derek Vaughn is tied to Viktor Vance’s old logistics syndicate, we aren't just looking at a domestic family dispute over a backyard cookout. We’re looking at a dormant sleeper cell with direct access to your immediate family."

"I’m holding the physical surveillance photograph in my hand right now, Marcus," I replied, keeping my voice steady, though my pulse raced with tactical alertness. "Date stamped March 2004 in Nairobi. Derek was stationed at the Ramstein transit hub at that exact time before his sudden medical discharge. He didn't just stumble into Vance's orbit—he was part of the pipeline."

"Okay, listen to me very carefully," Marcus instructed rapidly, keyboard clacking furiously in the background as he accessed secure federal databases. "Do not confront him again. Do not let on that you know anything. Vance’s syndicate was notorious for leaving zero digital footprints, and if Derek realizes his cover is blown, he won't just run—he could become extremely dangerous."

"I've spent twenty-two years outsmarting people far more dangerous than a disgruntled ex-supply corporal, Marcus," I reminded him quietly. "What do you need from my end?"

"Stay put in Richmond for now. I’m pinging the federal database for any recent financial anomalies linked to Derek or Mallory's household accounts. Given what you told me about him living above his means while working a mediocre logistics job, there has to be an offshore feeder account funding his lifestyle."

"Check shell corporations registered under third-party names in the Cayman Islands or Panama," I suggested, drawing on my old counter-intelligence training. "Vance always used tiered shell companies to launder embezzled military supply funds."

"Copy that. I’ll run the algorithm now. Give me two hours," Marcus said before the line clicked dead.

I slipped the burner phone back into my pocket and walked back to my childhood bedroom. Sleep was entirely out of the question now. Adrenaline coursed through my veins, sharpening every sense, clearing away the exhaustion of the day. I sat at the edge of the twin bed, staring at the moonlight reflecting off the hardwood floor.

How long had Derek been spying on me?

That chilling thought struck me like a physical blow. When I retired from the Marine Corps three years ago, I had intentionally chosen to move back to Richmond, close to my mother and sister, believing I was stepping away from the chessboard of international espionage and tactical threats into a quiet, ordinary civilian life. But if Derek had deliberately married my sister Mallory to keep tabs on me—to monitor whether my retirement was truly quiet, or whether I still retained classified contacts within the defense community—then my entire peaceful existence in Richmond was an elaborate illusion.

He had spent ten years mocking me, calling me the "office Marine," sneering at my paperwork, and treating me like an ordinary, harmless housewife. It was all a calculated psychological operation designed to keep me passive, compliant, and unsuspecting.

Except he had made one fatal miscalculation today.

He had humiliated my son, Toby, in front of the entire family, expecting me to stay silent like I always did. He had poked the sleeping bear because of his own bloated arrogance, completely forgetting that beneath the civilian cardigans and grocery bags lay a combat-tested lieutenant colonel who knew how to dismantle a threat from the inside out.

At 3:15 AM, my burner phone vibrated softly against the nightstand.

I snatched it up instantly, clicking open the encrypted messaging channel. A secure data packet had arrived from Marcus, containing a financial ledger and a corporate registry summary.

My eyes scanned the glowing screen. The data confirmed my worst suspicions. For the past eight years, a shell company named Apex Logistics Solutions—funneling millions of dollars through overseas accounts—had been making monthly wire transfers directly into a private Swiss bank account co-signed by Derek Vaughn and an unknown corporate entity operating out of Dubai.

And right beneath the financial summary, Marcus had added a chilling text note:

“Laurel, Apex Logistics isn't just a shell company. It’s a front for active arms trafficking currently under federal surveillance. And according to our latest intercept... Viktor Vance’s primary courier just landed in Washington D.C. less than twelve hours ago.”
