Chapter 16 - The Sister's Defeat

A few days after the raid,
I received a long,
frantic text from a new number—it was Morgan.
"Maya,
please help us,"
she begged,
the arrogance completely gone from her tone.
"We are staying in a cheap motel near the airport,
and we don't have enough money for food."
"Mom is sick from the stress,
and Preston won't leave his bed."
"I know I was awful to you,
and I am so sorry for how I acted at breakfast."
"Please,
just send us something to help us get through the month."
I read the message twice,
remembering the smirk she wore when her brother struck me.
She hadn't changed;
she was just hungry,
and her apology was born of necessity,
not genuine remorse.
I didn't reply,
simply blocking the number as I had done with the rest of her family.
They had to learn to survive on their own merits,
without the support of the woman they had tried to break.
I deleted the conversation history,
clearing the digital clutter from my life just as I had cleared the emotional wreckage.
May you like
They were no longer my concern;
they were just characters in a past chapter I had closed for good.
