Part 14: The Perimeter Restraint

Three months after the courtroom execution, the spring thaw had fully arrived at the Charlotte terminal.

The wide-open transport lanes were filled with the sound of incoming logistics trucks, their engines roaring.

My firm was now the dominant logistical force in the district, its assets completely secure under my nameplate.

I sat on a stone bench near the entrance garden, watching the trucks move past the security gates.

Then, a black luxury sedan pulled up to the curb, its engine idling with a low, deep rumble.

The passenger door opened, and Arthur Voss, the patriarch of the family, stepped out onto the path.

He was seventy-two years old, leaning heavily on a gold-headed cane, his face lined with bitter defeat.

He walked toward my bench, his polished shoes crunching slowly on the fresh gravel.

"You've dismantled my entire family line, Sarah," he said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper.

I didn't stand up to greet him.

I kept my hands inside my pockets, my face perfectly blank under the afternoon sun.

"Your family dismantled themselves, Arthur," I answered, my voice flat, clinical, and steady.

"They treated my daughter's trust fund like their personal corporate reserve line."

"I have a settlement proposal," he said, reaching into his coat for a slim leather folder.

"We will withdraw all remaining appellate claims if you release the lien on the lake property."

I looked at the folder, then looked him straight in his tired, cold eyes.

"The lake property was foreclosed by the state compliance board at noon today, Arthur," I said.

"There is nothing left to settle."
