Chapter 12 - A NEW DAWN OVER MANHATTAN

The silence that followed their departure was different from the silence before.
It was lighter,
cleaner,
as if the very air in the penthouse had been purified.
I walked over to where my black silk robe lay on the floor,
picked it up,
and threw it into the nearby trash bin without a second thought.
It was just a piece of fabric,
a relic of a past that no longer had any power over me.
Madeleine Cross closed her folder,
the sound marking the official end of the evening's proceedings.
"We are done here,
Evelyn,"
she said,
smiling warmly.
"The court filings are complete,
the assets are frozen,
and the district attorney has everything they need."
"Thank you,
Madeleine,"
I said,
shaking her hand.
"And thank you,
Donald,
Arthur.
I could not have done this without you."
They gathered their papers,
said their goodbyes,
and left through the elevator,
leaving me alone in the vast,
quiet penthouse.
I walked back to the window,
looking out at the city of New York once more.
The rain had stopped,
and the clouds were beginning to part,
revealing a clear,
starry night sky.
The city lights seemed brighter now,
no longer a cold grid of diamonds,
but a landscape of endless possibilities.
For nine months,
I had lived in the shadows of my husband's lies,
playing the part of the grieving,
foolish wife.
But tonight,
the play was over,
and the curtain had fallen on Grant Whitmore's ambitions.
My name is Evelyn,
and the day Grant underestimated me was indeed the day he destroyed himself.
But as I looked out over the city,
I knew that this was not just the story of his destruction.
It was the beginning of my creation.
I walked back to the table,
picked up my coffee cup,
May you like
and smiled at the empty room,
ready to face the new day.
