Chapter 6 - THE PALM BEACH RECKONING

Grant took another step toward the table,
his expression darkening as he tried to regain his footing.
"You will not win this,
Evelyn.
I have resources,
I have connections,
and I have partners who will support me."
"Be careful,
Grant,"
I said,
my voice remaining perfectly level.
"You are speaking to the woman who funded those resources."
"You are angry,"
he sneered,
leaning closer.
"You are acting out of spite because you found out about us."
I looked at the face of the man I had once loved,
searching for any trace of the person I thought I knew.
There was nothing left but greed and desperation.
"I was angry nine months ago,"
I said softly.
His expression changed,
just a tiny flicker of movement in his eyes,
but I saw it.
I saw the exact moment he began to count backward in his mind.
Nine months since our trip to Palm Beach.
Nine months since the first unauthorized wire transfer from my mother's trust.
Nine months since he had started believing he was a criminal genius.
He had thought I was blind,
too distracted by my grief over my mother's passing to notice the missing funds.
He had thought his secret meetings with Sienna in Florida were completely hidden.
But the truth was,
I had known about them before they even checked into their luxury villa.
I had watched him transfer the first fifty thousand dollars,
and instead of confronting him,
I had waited.
I had stopped being his grieving,
submissive wife,
and I had became his silent,
methodical auditor.
Every dinner,
every gift,
every trip he had bought for Sienna had been paid for with my family's money,
and every single cent had been documented.
"Nine months,"
he whispered,
the color slowly draining from his face.
"Yes,
Grant,"
May you like
I said.
"Nine months of giving you enough rope to hang yourself."
