Chapter 18 - DISINHERITING THE HEIR

Richard Sterling stared at his son with an intensity that made Preston shrink back visibly against the foot of the bed.

With a raspy,

commanding voice that carried decades of corporate executive authority,

Richard demanded to know what had happened while he was unconscious.

Preston stammered nervously,

attempting to downplay the situation and claim that everything was fine now that his father was awake.

I stepped back quietly toward the door,

preparing to leave father and son alone to resolve their familial reckoning.

Before I could exit,

Richard raised a shaky hand,

signaling me to stay right where I was.

He turned his piercing gaze back to Preston,

asking him point-blank about Cecily Blair and the secret marriage registry from Greenwich.

Preston’s face drained of all color in an instant,

his mouth dropping open in absolute shock and horror.

He looked wildly between his father and me,

realizing that the entire truth of his betrayal was fully laid bare.

Richard did not wait for an excuse,

launching into a scathing,

furious indictment of his son’s moral cowardice and utter lack of integrity.

He declared that a man who could betray the woman who saved his father’s life—and build his entire adult foundation on deceit—was unfit to carry the Sterling family name.

Preston begged for forgiveness,

falling to his knees beside the hospital bed and sobbing like a child.

He claimed he loved Cecily,

but realized too late what he had thrown away with me.

Richard looked down at his kneeling son with profound disappointment,

shaking his head slowly from side to side.

He announced the ultimate consequence: effective immediately,

Preston was stripped of his executive vice presidency at Sterling Corp.

Furthermore,

Richard stated that his entire voting share and personal estate would be placed into an independent philanthropic trust,

disinheriting Preston from the family fortune.

Preston let out a choked,

agonized cry of disbelief,

realizing that his corporate empire and financial security had vanished in a single breath.

He had gambled his entire legacy on a fleeting affair with Cecily,

and he had lost absolutely everything.

Richard dismissed him with a sweeping wave of his hand,

ordering him out of the room before security had to throw him out physically.

Preston scrambled backward toward the door,

casting one desperate,

tearful glance in my direction.

I stared back at him with absolute,

frozen indifference.

He turned and bolted out of the room,

fleeing into the empty hallway as his entire privileged world crumbled into dust around him.
