Chapter 8 - THE CONFRONTATION WITH CECILY

The sterile scrub sink in the surgical staging corridor hummed with the steady flow of warm,
antibacterial water.
I lathered my hands and forearms up to the elbows with chlorhexidine soap,
scrubbing methodically under my fingernails.
My movements were precise,
ritualistic,
and completely devoid of nervous tension.
Suddenly,
the heavy double doors of the scrub area pushed open,
admitting an uninvited visitor.
Cecily Blair stood in the doorway,
wearing an oversized designer coat over her pajamas,
looking frantic and disheveled.
She had evidently rushed straight from her apartment upon hearing that I had taken the case.
She took a hesitant step toward the scrub sink,
calling my name in a tremulous,
manufactured tone of sisterly concern.
I did not look up from my scrubbing,
continuing my rhythmic motions with icy indifference.
Cecily stopped a few feet away,
wringing her hands together and stammering about how worried she had been about me and Richard.
She began weaving a pathetic narrative about how complicated things were,
claiming her marriage to Preston was a sudden mistake born of confusion.
I turned off the water with a sharp elbow tap,
letting the sensor silence the running stream instantly.
I reached for a sterile towel,
drying my hands slowly while finally turning my gaze toward her.
My eyes were like chips of glacial ice,
pinning her to the spot with a gaze that made her flinch visibly.
I told Cecily to spare me the theatrical dramatics and save her breath for someone who actually cared about her lies.
I reminded her that she had spent six months helping me design wedding invitations while secretly sleeping with my fiancé.
I pointed out that her digital fingerprint was permanently stamped on every fraudulent text and registry confirmation forwarded to my phone.
Cecily’s face drained of what little color it had left,
her mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air.
She realized in that instant that I knew every sordid detail of their treachery,
down to the exact date and time at Greenwich Town Hall.
She whispered a desperate plea for forgiveness,
claiming that Preston had pursued her relentlessly and she was weak.
I cut her off with a sharp wave of my hand,
telling her that weakness was not an excuse for calculated betrayal.
I informed her that she and Preston deserved each other,
bound together by mutual dishonesty and moral bankruptcy.
Then,
I gestured toward the double doors behind her with my sterile-gloved hands held high.
I told her that if she did not remove herself from this surgical wing within ten seconds,
I would have hospital security physically escort her out into the paparazzi-filled street.
Tears welled up in Cecily’s eyes,
but she saw the absolute granite resolve in my expression.
She turned on her heel and fled the scrub area,
sobbing loudly as the heavy doors swung shut behind her.
I took a deep,
steadying breath,
letting the adrenaline purge the last remnants of personal drama from my system.

It was time to enter the operating theater and perform a miracle.
Nothing else in the universe mattered except the beating heart waiting for my blade.
