Chapter 1 - The Cruelest Afternoon at Whispering Pines

The sun-drenched terrace of the Whispering Pines Country Club was filled with the soft clinking of crystal glasses,
and the polite,
fake laughter of New York’s elite.
Mary Jenkins,
a quiet woman in her late forties,
carefully balanced a silver tray carrying three glasses of expensive red wine.
She had been working double shifts at the club for months,
swallowing her pride every single day just to help pay off her son's final college tuition.
Her feet ached,
but she kept a polite,
professional smile on her face.
Sitting at the center table was Eleanor Vance,
the undisputed queen bee of the club’s social circle,
wearing a pristine,
custom-made white Chanel sundress.
"I told you,
Victoria,
if you don't buy the Hamptons estate by this weekend,
someone else will,"
Eleanor scoffed,
waving her hand dismissively just as Mary approached the table to serve the drinks.
In a split second,
Eleanor stood up abruptly to gesture to a friend across the lawn.
Her sharp elbow slammed directly into Mary’s tray.
Crash.
The crystal shattered.
A deep,
crimson wave of red wine splashed instantly across the front of Eleanor’s pure white dress,
staining it completely.
The entire terrace went dead silent.
Eleanor gasped,
looking down at her ruined outfit in absolute horror.
Her face contorted with pure rage.
Before Mary could even utter an apology,
Eleanor turned and slapped the heavy silver tray right out of Mary's hands.
"You clumsy,
pathetic idiot!"
Eleanor shrieked,
her voice ringing across the golf course.
"Do you have any idea how much this dress costs?
You couldn't afford a single thread of it if you worked here for the rest of your miserable life!"
"I am so sorry,
Mrs. Vance,
it was an accident—"
Mary began,
her voice trembling as she backed away.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
Fuelled by embarrassment and malice,
she violently shoved Mary backward.
Mary lost her balance,
falling hard onto the concrete floor of the terrace.
Her hands slammed directly into the sharp shards of the broken wine glasses.
A sharp piece of crystal sliced deep into her right palm,
and bright red blood began to pool quickly on the gray stone.
Mary cried out in pain,
clutching her bleeding hand to her chest.
None of the wealthy onlookers moved to help.
They just watched,
whispering behind their designer sunglasses.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you!"
Eleanor barked,
stepping right up to where Mary was trembling on the ground.
She pointed a manicured finger down at her expensive,
wine-soaked designer heels.
"Get on your knees.
Right now."
Mary looked up,
tears blurring her vision,
her bleeding hand shaking.
"Please,
Mrs. Vance..."
"I said,
get on your knees and clean my shoes!"
Eleanor demanded,
her eyes cold and cruel.
"Use your uniform.
Wipe every single drop of wine off my shoes,
or I will make sure you are fired,
blacklisted,
and thrown out on the street by sunset."
Desperate to keep her job,
and crushed under the weight of her own poverty,
Mary slowly dragged herself onto her knees.
Ignoring the sharp pain and the blood dripping from her hand,
she took the edge of her server's apron and began to wipe Eleanor’s shoes,
weeping silently while the wealthy crowd looked on with cold indifference.
Eleanor sneered down at her,
completely satisfied.
"That's exactly where people like you belong.
At the bottom."
She had no idea that this single act of cruelty would cost her everything by tomorrow morning.
Mary finished the task,
her heart hardened by the humiliation.
She stood up,
her hand throbbing,
and looked Eleanor directly in the eyes.
For the first time,
the fear in Mary's gaze was replaced by a cold,
calculating resolve.
She didn't apologize again.
She simply turned and walked away,
May you like
leaving the stunned socialites in her wake.
The game had just begun.
