Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The projections on the giant screen were relentless,

a cascading waterfall of financial crimes that left no room for denial.

The audience,

initially polite and celebratory,

now stood in stunned silence,

their eyes fixed on the evidence of the Vances’ corruption.

Eleanor stood frozen on the stage,

the spotlight still upon her,

but now it served only to illuminate her shock and absolute horror.

The documents were clear,

the dates were precise,

and the signatures were unmistakable.

"This is a lie!"

Eleanor shrieked,

her voice cracking as she tried to regain control of the situation.

"This is a smear campaign!

Someone hacked the system!"

But no one was listening to her.

The whispers had turned into shouts.

Cameras flashed from every corner of the room as the guests realized they were witnessing the end of an empire.

Reporters who had been invited for the gala found their focus shifting entirely to the screen.

Richard stumbled onto the stage,

his face a mask of defeat.

He grabbed the microphone,

trying to make an announcement,

but he was drowned out by the roar of the crowd.

"Get her off the stage!"

someone yelled.

"Thief!"

cried another voice.

The security guards,

unsure of what to do,

hovered uncertainly near the back.

Mary,

watching from the shadows,

felt a cold sense of satisfaction.

She saw the look of pure terror on Eleanor's face,

the same look of desperation Mary had felt on the concrete terrace.

It was a perfect mirror.

Eleanor grabbed her clutch,

trying to force her way off the stage,

but the path was blocked by a wall of cameras and furious donors who had been duped.

The police,

alerted by an anonymous tip,

were already pushing their way through the front doors.

The chaos was absolute.

The white lilies that had decorated the room now seemed like funeral flowers for a dying socialite.

Mary slipped out of the side exit,

the cool night air hitting her face.

She walked to her car,

not looking back.

She didn't need to see the cuffs go on.

She knew the damage was done.

The documents she had provided contained not only the financial fraud but also the proof that Eleanor had been blackmailing the board of the country club to keep her position.

There would be no lawyer,

no bribe,

no "oops" explanation that could save her now.

As Mary drove away,

she felt the weight of the last three months lift from her shoulders.

The pain in her hand was still there,

but it was healing.

She pulled over at a quiet park and sat on a bench,

watching the city lights flicker in the distance.

She had done what she set out to do.

She had balanced the scales.

She had shown the queen that her throne was built on sand,

and that the tide,

when it came,

would wash it all away.

She pulled out her phone and saw a notification.

The news cycle was already blowing up.

"The Fall of the Vance Dynasty,"

the headlines screamed.

She closed her eyes,

breathing in the quiet of the night.

She had her dignity back.

And for the first time in a long time,

she knew exactly where she was going.

The road ahead was open,

May you like

clear,

and entirely her own.
