Chapter 4 - The Gala of Secrets

The evening of the charity gala arrived,
a glittering spectacle of silk,
diamonds,
and artificial smiles.
The ballroom was adorned with thousands of white lilies,
their scent cloying and heavy in the air.
Eleanor Vance stood at the entrance,
her gown a stunning masterpiece of sequins and lace,
greeting guests with the practiced charm of a queen.
She looked invincible,
her head held high,
her laughter ringing through the room.
But beneath the surface,
she was unraveling.
Richard had spent the last twenty-four hours in a state of panic,
his calls to their accountants going unanswered.
Every time a waiter walked by,
Eleanor flinched,
half-expecting to see Mary standing there with a tray of wine.
The paranoia was eating her alive.
"You look nervous,
darling,"
one of her friends remarked,
sipping champagne.
"Is everything alright?"
"Everything is perfect,"
Eleanor lied,
forcing a smile.
"I’m just exhausted from the planning."
Across the room,
a woman in a modest black dress stood near the buffet,
her eyes sweeping the crowd.
It was Mary.
She had not been invited,
of course,
but she had walked in with the caterers,
blending into the background as she had for years.
She knew the rhythm of the staff,
the way they moved,
the way they were ignored.
She was invisible,
just as she had been before,
but this time,
she carried a flash drive in her pocket that held the end of Eleanor's world.
She watched as Eleanor moved through the room,
the picture of elegance.
She watched the way Eleanor treated the servers,
tossing orders,
never meeting their eyes.
"You haven't changed a bit,"
Mary whispered to herself.
She found the main audio console,
the heart of the gala’s presentation.
She had greased the palms of the technician earlier,
a young man who was more than happy to make a little extra cash for "technical support."
She slid the flash drive into the port.
"Ten minutes,"
she murmured.
"Ten minutes until the reveal."
Eleanor took the stage,
the spotlight bathing her in gold.
She began her speech,
talking about philanthropy,
about giving back,
about the importance of community.
The irony was suffocating.
Mary stepped into the shadows,
waiting.
She saw Julian in the back of the room,
his phone ready,
his camera recording.
This was going to be the biggest scandal the city had ever seen.
Eleanor beamed,
her voice projecting clearly.
"We are here tonight to celebrate the spirit of generosity,"
she said,
her voice smooth and practiced.
"And I am so proud to announce a donation of one million dollars to the city's youth program."
Applause erupted,
a wave of sound that washed over the room.
Eleanor bowed her head,
modest and gracious.
But then,
the audio system flickered.
The music cut out,
replaced by a low,
static hum.
The massive screen behind Eleanor,
intended for a presentation of charity photos,
began to glitch.
The audience murmured,
confused.
Eleanor frowned,
looking back.
"What is going on?"
she asked,
her voice sharp.
Then,
the screen went black,
and the first document appeared.
It was a bank statement.
A clear,
undeniable record of a transfer from the country club's maintenance fund to an offshore account in the Virgin Islands.
The room went dead silent.
Then,
another slide.
A contract with forged signatures.
Then,
an email exchange between Eleanor and a shell company manager,
May you like
discussing the logistics of the fraud.
The ballroom erupted in chaos.
