Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Ice

The sun rose over Chicago in a brilliant display of pink and gold, breaking through the storm clouds that had haunted the city for days.

In the master bedroom of the Caruso estate, the thick, heavy blackout drapes had been pulled back for the first time in three years. Bright, golden sunlight poured over the dark walnut paneling, illuminating the quiet room.

Reed stood by the tall window, looking down at the manicured lawn. His hand rested on the glass. His shoulder was bandaged beneath his dark shirt, his knuckles bruised, but his chest felt lighter than it had in a lifetime.

The door softly clicked open.

Elise stepped in, holding two fresh mugs of coffee. She wore a simple cream-colored sweater and jeans, her dark hair tied back in a loose bun. The small bandage on her temple was a stark reminder of yesterday's terror, but her face was calm, serene.

"The girls are eating breakfast," Elise said softly, walking over and handing him a mug. "Marco is down in the kitchen letting them put stickers on his arm cast."

Reed let out a soft, low chuckle—a sound so unexpected and warm that Elise couldn't help but smile.

"Marco is going to lose his terrifying reputation if he’s not careful," Reed said, taking a sip of the coffee. He looked at her over the rim of the mug. "How are you holding up?"

"I should be asking you that," Elise replied, leaning against the window frame beside him. "You look like you fought a war."

"I ended one," Reed said simply, his gray eyes fixing on hers. "The threat is gone, Elise. Julian... and everyone connected to him. The estate is secure. My children are safe."

Elise looked down into her coffee cup. A strange, unexpected ache bloomed in her chest. The threat was gone. The security was restored. Which meant... her job here was done. She had been hired to manage a crisis, to help traumatized children through a dark period. Now that the house was safe and Reed was stepping back up as a father, did she belong here anymore?

"That’s... wonderful news, Reed," Elise said, forcing a warm smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I'm glad. They deserve peace."

Reed noticed the subtle shift in her voice instantly. He stepped closer, placing his mug on the windowsill, his sharp eyes searching her face. "What is it?"

"Nothing," Elise said, shaking her head softly. "It’s just... now that things are settling down, and you’re back to being present for them, I suppose we should talk about my contract. The agency—"

"No," Reed interrupted sharply.

Elise blinked. "No?"

Reed took the mug from her hand and set it down beside his own. He grabbed both of her hands in his, his large fingers enveloping hers, his touch warm and firm.

"You aren't leaving," Reed said, his voice carrying an intense, absolute certainty that left no room for argument.

"Reed, I was hired as a temporary nanny—"

"I don't care what you were hired as," Reed cut in, stepping even closer until there was no space left between them. The scent of rain, cedar, and dark coffee drifted off him, intoxicating and powerful. "Twelve days ago, you walked into this tomb and brought light back into it. You made my daughters laugh when I thought they had forgotten how. You bled to protect them. And last night..." He paused, his voice softening, becoming thick with emotion. "...last night, you made me realize that I wanted to live again."

Elise felt her heart hammering against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat as she looked up into his intense gray eyes.

"Reed..." she whispered.

"I don't want a nanny for my children, Elise," Reed said, reaching up to softly cup her jaw, his thumb tracing the smooth curve of her cheekbone. "I want you. I want you in this house. I want you at my table. I want you in my life."

"This world you live in..." Elise stammered, her heart racing. "It’s dangerous, Reed. It’s dark."

"Then help me change it," Reed pleaded, his voice stripped of all pride, completely open and vulnerable. "Help me build a real life for them. I have the power to step back, to delegate the dirty work, to make this family safe. But I can't do it without you. You are the anchor, Elise. You're my anchor."

Tears pricked at the corners of Elise’s eyes. She had spent her entire life taking care of everyone else—her sick brother, her struggling family, other people’s children—always the worker, always the outsider looking in at wealth and comfort. But looking at Reed Caruso—a man who could command an army of shadows, yet stood before her trembling with the fear of losing her—she knew she had found where she belonged.

"You're crazy, Mr. Caruso," Elise whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek.

"Only about you, Miss Navarro," Reed murmured.

He leaned down, closing the small distance between them, and pressed his lips to hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and intoxicating. It carried the weight of three years of darkness being burned away by light. Reed pulled her flush against his broad chest, his arms wrapping around her waist as if holding onto the most precious treasure in the world. Elise wound her arms around his neck, sinking into his warmth, giving herself completely over to the fiery passion that blossomed between them.

When they finally broke apart, panting softly, Reed rested his forehead against hers, his hands holding her waist tightly.

Suddenly, a tiny voice piped up from the open doorway.

"Papa?"

Reed and Elise turned quickly, breaking apart slightly.

Maisie and Rosie were standing in the doorway, wearing matching pink pajamas, each holding a half-eaten pancake. Maisie was pointing a sticky finger at them.

"Is Lisi staying?" Maisie asked, her big blue eyes wide with hope.

Rosie took a bite of her pancake, her small voice chiming in. "Is she gonna do the duck dance again?"

Reed looked down at his daughters, then back at Elise. A bright, gorgeous smile spread across his face—the smile of a man who was finally, completely home.

May you like

He walked over, dropping to one knee, and gathered both of his little girls into his strong arms, lifting them into the air as they squealed with delight.

"Yes," Reed said, looking back over his shoulder at Elise, his eyes shining with pure, undeniable love. "Lisi is staying forever. And we're all going to do the duck dance."
