Chapter 7 - The Seeds of Change

Six months later.

The Caruso mansion was no longer recognizable as the silent, cold fortress it had once been.

The dark black drapes were gone, replaced by light, airy linen that let the summer breeze flow through the long corridors. The polished marble floors, once silent as a tomb, were now strewn with colorful chalk drawings, toy cars, and wooden building blocks.

In the grand courtyard, where bullets had ripped through the hydrangeas six months prior, a massive wooden playground had been constructed. Swings, a slide, and a wooden playhouse now stood where the sniper fire had once centered.

Elise stood near the edge of the sandbox, wearing a sunhat and a light summer dress, watching Maisie and Rosie build a elaborate sandcastle.

"Lisi! Look!" Rosie cheered, holding up a plastic bucket filled with sand. "It’s the king’s castle!"

"It’s beautiful, sweetheart," Elise laughed, wiping a bit of sand off Rosie’s cheek. "Now we just need the moat."

"I'll handle the water," a deep voice called out.

Reed walked across the grass, wearing a casual navy polo shirt and chinos—a dramatic departure from the bulletproof three-piece suits he used to wear every single day. He held a small red watering can, kneeling down beside his daughters in the sand without a second thought for his expensive clothes.

He poured a small stream of water around the sand castle, making the girls squeal with laughter as they patted the wet sand into place.

Elise watched him, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of contentment.

In the past six months, Reed had restructured his entire empire. He had appointed Marco as the Chief of Operations, stepping back from the day-to-day street enforcement and transitioning the Caruso family assets into legitimate real estate, shipping, and charitable foundations. The mafia chief was becoming a titan of industry, insulating his family behind layers of legal legitimacy and impenetrable, state-of-the-art security that required no violence to maintain.

"You're getting mud on your pants, Mr. Caruso," Elise teased, walking over and resting her hand on his shoulder.

Reed looked up, his pale gray eyes—now permanently warmed by happiness—shining as he looked at her. He stood up, wrapping an arm around her waist, pulling her close and pressing a soft kiss to her temple.

"Pants can be washed, my love," Reed murmured softly into her hair. "These moments can't be replaced."

A shiny black sedan pulled up to the main gates, and Marco stepped out. He walked across the lawn, holding a thick leather folder. He looked far healthier than he had six months ago; his shoulder was fully healed, and the constant, paranoid stress had melted from his face.

"Boss," Marco said politely, bowing his head slightly to Elise. "Miss Elise. The paperwork for the South Side Community Center acquisition has been finalized. The Caruso Foundation now officially owns the land. Construction on the new children's hospital begins next month."

Elise smiled brightly. "That’s amazing, Marco! Thank you!"

"Don't thank me, Miss Elise," Marco said with a warm grin. "Thank the boss. He’s been breathing down the city council's necks for three weeks to get the permits approved."

Reed shrugged nonchalantly, though a proud smirk touched his lips. "I told them if they didn't approve the permits, I’d buy the city council building and turn it into a parking lot. It’s amazing how fast bureaucracy moves when properly motivated."

Elise shook her head, laughing as she swatted his arm. "You can't threaten city officials, Reed!"

"It wasn't a threat, sweetheart," Reed said innocently. "It was an investment strategy."

"Papa! Lisi! Look!" Maisie called out from the sandbox. She had put on those same bright yellow kitchen gloves that Elise had worn on her very first night—now permanently kept in the nursery as a treasured relic—and was waving her hands wildly in the air. "Duck dance! Duck dance!"

Rosie joined in, flapping her arms and making squeaking noises.

Reed looked at Elise, a playful spark in his eyes. He reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone, and tapped the screen. The heavy external speakers hidden around the garden began playing a bouncy, upbeat pop song.

"Shall we?" Reed asked, holding out his hand to Elise with a grand, dramatic bow.

Elise gasped, giggling. "Reed, no! You are not doing the duck dance!"

"I am the head of the Caruso family," Reed declared with absolute, hilarious seriousness. "I do whatever it takes to entertain my princesses."

Without another word, the terrifying mafia king pulled on a pair of oversized red rubber dish gloves that he pulled from his back pocket, cross-eyed his pale gray eyes, and began wobbling across the grass like an absurd, giant duck.

The girls collapsed into hysterics, rolling on the grass, clapping their hands.

Elise stood by, tears of laughter streaming down her face, watching the man she loved render himself completely ridiculous just to hear his children laugh. She joined in, twirling around the grass, waving her hands, as the sound of pure, unadulterated joy filled the sunny afternoon sky.
