Chapter 9 - The Ring and the Promise

Autumn arrived in Chicago with a crisp, cool breeze that painted the oak trees surrounding the Caruso estate in vibrant shades of orange, deep red, and gold.
It was a quiet Saturday evening. A soft fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace of the master living room, filling the space with the warm, woody scent of burning cedar.
The girls had spent the entire afternoon collecting colorful autumn leaves in the garden, and were now fast asleep upstairs, exhausted from their adventures, tucked safely into their beds with their favorite stuffed ducks.
Elise sat on the plush leather sofa near the fire, wearing an oversized knit sweater, a mug of warm spiced cider held between her hands.
Reed walked in quietly, pouring himself a glass of water. He sat down beside her, stretching his arm along the back of the sofa, pulling her gently against his chest. Elise leaned into his warmth with an easy, practiced comfort, resting her head against his shoulder.
"They went to sleep without a single complaint tonight," Elise remarked softly, watching the flames dance. "Rosie even gave her nightlight away to Maisie because Maisie said she wasn't scared of the dark anymore."
"They're growing up fast," Reed murmured, his fingers gently playing with a strand of her dark hair. "Because of you."
"Because of us," Elise corrected, looking up at him. "You're a wonderful father, Reed. I hope you know that."
Reed looked down at her, his pale eyes soft with an overwhelming, profound tenderness. "I didn't know what living was until you showed up in that nursery with those yellow gloves, Elise. I was just a ghost managing an empire of ghosts."
He reached into his pocket, his hand lingering inside for a moment, his jaw tightening slightly with a rare, adorable nervousness.
Elise noticed it immediately. "Reed? What is it?"
Reed let out a slow breath, turning his body toward her. He slid off the sofa, dropping gracefully onto one knee on the Persian rug before her.
Elise’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart began to hammer wildly against her ribs, her hands tightening around her mug before she quickly set it down on the coffee table.
Reed reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box of deep emerald green. He opened it softly.
Inside sat a breathtaking ring: a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond mounted on a delicate band of platinum, surrounded by tiny, sparkling sapphires—the exact color of his eyes.
"Reed..." Elise whispered, tears instantly rising to her eyes.
"Elise Navarro," Reed said, his voice rough with emotion, stripped of all armor, showing only the pure, raw soul of a man completely devoted. "You saved my daughters. You saved me. You brought music, laughter, and life back into a house that was dead. I don't just love you; I need you. I want to spend every morning watching you make blueberry towers, every afternoon watching you dance in the garden, and every night holding you in my arms."
He looked up at her, his pale eyes shining with unshed tears. "Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you be the mother to my daughters, the queen of my home, and the love of my life?"
Elise didn't hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
"Yes!" she cried out, tears spilling over her cheeks as she threw her arms around his neck, pulling him into a fierce, breathless hug. "Yes, yes, absolute yes!"
Reed let out a loud, breathless laugh, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off the sofa as he brought his lips down to hers. The kiss was deep, passionate, filled with the promise of a bright, beautiful future built on the ruins of a painful past.
When he slipped the ring onto her finger, it fit perfectly, sparkling brilliantly in the warm light of the fire.
From the top of the grand staircase, two tiny heads peered through the wooden banisters.
"Is Lisi gonna be our mommy now?" Maisie whispered loudly to Rosie.
"I think so!" Rosie whispered back, bouncing up and down in her footed pajamas. "Does that mean we get cake?!"

Reed and Elise looked up toward the stairs, bursting into bright, warm laughter that echoed through the vast, beautiful home.
"Yes, my sweet ducks!" Reed shouted up to them, pulling Elise close against his side as she beamed with pure happiness. "We get cake! All the cake in the world!"
