Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

The silence on the street was heavier than lead.
Victoria looked down at her own dress, following Richard’s frozen gaze. When her eyes landed on the bloody handprints, a split second of sheer panic flashed across her face before she quickly forced another wave of tears into her eyes.
"Richard, listen to me," Victoria stammered, her voice dropping an octave as she tried to pull her wrist free. "They... they grabbed onto me when I was trying to restrain them! They were hysterical because Emily left! You know how unstable triplets can be—"
"You told me they were sleeping in the nursery," Richard said. His voice wasn't angry. It was terrifyingly calm, a flat, lifeless tone that sent a chill straight down Victoria’s spine. "Fifteen minutes ago, when I threw Emily out, I asked you where the boys were. You told me you personally tucked them in and that they were asleep."
"They... they woke up!" Victoria insisted, her breathing becoming rapid and shallow. "They woke up and threw a tantrum!"
"With glass?" Richard asked, slowly turning his head to look directly into her eyes. "My sons have cut wrists and glass embedded in their arms, Victoria. If they broke a window from the inside of the pantry... how did the blood get on the outside of your dress?"
Victoria’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The elaborate lie she had constructed in a matter of minutes was crumbling under the weight of simple, brutal logic.
"Miss Emily!" Liam whimpered, pulling on Emily’s collar. "My feet hurt..."
Emily didn't wait for Richard's permission. She picked up Liam in her right arm and Noah in her left, standing up despite the strain on her back. "I'm taking them to the hospital," she said firmly, not even looking at Victoria. "They need stitches and a tetanus shot immediately."
"I'll drive," Richard said instantly, letting go of Victoria’s wrist so fast it swung back against her hip.
"No," Emily retorted sharply, stepping back from him. "Look at them, Mr. Hawthorne. They are terrified of you right now. You chose to believe a lie, and your negligence almost cost them their lives. Touch them, and you'll make their panic worse. I am calling an ambulance."
Richard flinched as if she had struck him across the face. For the first time in his life, the powerful tech mogul stood utterly helpless, stripped of his authority, watching a housekeeper treat him like a dangerous stranger to his own children.
"Emily... please," Richard rasped, his voice breaking. "Let me take my kids to the doctor. I'll drive behind you. Just... please don't leave them."
"Richard!" Victoria shrieked, stepping between him and Emily. "Are you insane?! You're taking the word of a common servant and three traumatized toddlers over ME? I am your fiancée! We are getting married in two months! My family's company is funding your new server initiative!"
Richard slowly turned to face Victoria. The grief and confusion in his eyes melted away, replaced by an absolute, icy fury that made even the hardened heiress step back in fear.
"You put your hands on my children," Richard said softly.
"I didn't—!"
"Get off my property," Richard commanded.
"Richard, be reasonable!" Victoria pleaded, reaching for his hand again. "You can't do this over a misunderstanding! Think about the media! Think about the board of directors! If you break our engagement over this ridiculous accusation—"
"If you are still on my estate grounds when I return from the hospital," Richard interrupted, his voice echoing off the surrounding villas, "I will not only have you arrested for child endangerment, aggravated assault, and framing a domestic worker... I will spend every single dollar in my corporate treasury to ensure you and your family's firm are utterly ruined by nightfall."
Victoria went completely still. She stared at Richard, searching his face for any sign of a bluff. But there was none. The man standing before her was no longer a polished CEO or a gullible fiancé—he was an apex predator whose offspring had just been threatened.
Without another word, Richard turned his back on her, walked over to Emily's discarded suitcase, picked it up with one hand, and looked at Emily.
"The SUV is running in the driveway," he said quietly. "Please, Emily. For the boys."
Emily looked at the blood dripping onto her uniform from Noah’s wrist. She swallowed her pride, pushed down her anger, and nodded once. "Open the door."
As they walked back toward the iron gates, Victoria stood alone in the middle of the street. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, ugly rage as she watched the family she had tried to control walk away from her.

She pulled her phone from her purse, her blood-stained fingers trembling over the touchscreen, and dialed a private number.
"It went wrong," Victoria hissed into the phone, her voice venomous. "The old man found out. Initiate Phase Two right now—before he checks the central servers."
