Chapter 6 - Midnight Raid

At 11:45 PM, a fleet of dark black sedans sped through the heavy rain, pulling up outside the grand wrought-iron gates of the Hawthorne mansion.
The estate was completely dark. The grand fountains were still, and the sprawling stone mansion looked like a hollow, haunted castle against the stormy sky.
Richard stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by Arthur Pendelton, three state police investigators, and a team of federal cyber-crime agents holding a federal search warrant signed by a high court judge just an hour prior.
"System is locked down tight, Mr. Hawthorne," the lead federal agent reported, looking at a digital tablet. "Victoria's legal team activated the remote security protocol at 8:00 PM. The electronic doors are deadlocked."
Richard didn't say a word. He walked up the grand marble steps of his front porch, reached into his coat, and pulled out the silver key Emily had given him.
He inserted the key into a hidden manual lock concealed beneath the brass door knocker and turned it ninety degrees to the left.
CLICK-CLACK.
A heavy, mechanical thud echoed through the mansion frame as the high-tech magnetic locks disengaged instantly. The grand mahogany double doors swung open, revealing the dark, silent interior of the grand foyer.
"Move in!" the lead agent commanded.
The team flooded into the house with flashlights, their boots echoing loudly against the polished marble floor.
Richard walked directly past the grand staircase, heading toward the private study behind the library. The house felt cold, eerie, and devoid of life. As he walked through the hallway, he saw the shattered glass from the pantry door where his five-year-old sons had desperately broken through to escape their captor.
Seeing the dried drops of blood on the floorboards hit Richard like a fresh dagger to the heart.
"Over here, sir," Arthur called out from inside the library.
Richard entered the room. The massive oak bookcase had been swung open, revealing the reinforced steel door of his private vault.
Richard approached the vault, located the concealed mechanical keyhole near the base, and inserted the silver key. He turned it three times.
With a deep, pneumatic hiss, the steel vault door unlocked and slid open.
Inside, sitting on a pristine metal desk, was a vintage, heavy-duty offline server rack, its green indicator lights blinking steadily in the dark. Beside it sat a high-definition monitor displaying live, unedited footage from every room in the house.
The federal agent quickly plugged a secure flash drive into the server port and initiated a diagnostic scan.
"Holy direct feeds..." the agent breathed out in awe. "Look at timestamp 1:15 PM today."
Richard leaned over the desk, his eyes locked on the monitor screen.
The video was crystal clear.
It showed Victoria Lane standing inside Richard's study. She was holding Richard's personal laptop, typing rapidly into the system using a physical flash drive provided by her father's firm. On the desk beside her lay a stolen platinum Rolex—the exact watch she had claimed Emily stole.
The video recorded her clear, audible voice as she spoke on her speakerphone to her father:
“I’m initiating the transfer of the AI source code now, Dad. I’ve already placed the Rolex in the servant’s coat. Richard is throwing her out right now. He’s so blind he hasn't even checked on the boys. By the time he realizes the code is gone, we’ll be in London, and the servant will be taking the blame for the theft.”
"Gotcha," the federal agent grinned, slapping his hand onto the desk. "This isn't just corporate espionage. This is premeditated grand larceny, fraud, and child endangerment captured on a unhackable server. Her father’s firm is done. Victoria Lane is going to federal prison for twenty years."
Arthur Pendelton let out a long, triumphant breath. "I'm transmitting this file directly to the SEC and the International Police Registry right now. By sunrise, every asset the Lane family owns will be frozen, and an international Red Notice will be issued for Victoria’s arrest."
Everyone in the room celebrated. The company was saved. The truth was exposed. The villains were utterly defeated.
But Richard didn't smile.
He stood in the dim light of the vault, staring at another screen on the rack—a video feed from six months ago.

The video showed Emily sitting on the carpet of the nursery at 2:00 AM, holding three sick, crying toddlers in her arms. She was rocking them gently, singing to them, wiping their tears, sacrificing her own rest night after night to give them the warmth they were denied.
Richard buried his face in his hands and wept.
