Chapter 4 - The House of Lies

The storm outside the hospital window matched the chaos inside Richard’s mind.

Heavy rain lashed against the glass as Richard stood in the corridor outside the pediatric ward, surrounded by three of his top security officers and his head corporate legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton.

"The freeze is absolute, Richard," Arthur said, holding an iPad displaying red financial red flags. "The Lane family executed the filing at 2:00 PM—precisely when you were dismissing Emily. Because Victoria had executive access to your home office router, she used your personal digital signature to authorize the transfer of the source code to her father’s overseas servers."

"She ruined my family’s legacy in thirty minutes," Richard whispered, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth hurt. "And I gave her the keys."

"What are your orders sir?" the chief of security asked. "Should we locate Ms. Lane?"

"She’s already gone," Arthur warned. "Our sources indicate she boarded a private jet to London twenty minutes ago. Her family holds dual citizenship. Extradition will take months, if not years—and by then, your company will be bankrupt, and the SEC will have liquidated your personal assets."

Richard closed his eyes, pressing his knuckles against his forehead.

Everything he had built—the empire that was supposed to secure his sons' futures for generations—was evaporating in real-time. But as he stood there on the verge of total ruin, a soft sound came from the doorway of the hospital room behind him.

The door clicked open, and Emily stepped out, closing it quietly behind her.

"The boys are sleeping," Emily said softly, adjusting her worn cardigan around her shoulders. "The doctor gave them a mild sedative to help with the pain. They should rest for at least six hours."

Richard turned to look at her.

Here he was, a billionaire stripped of his fortune, his reputation in tatters, standing in front of a woman he had humiliated, falsely accused, and thrown into the street without a dime just four hours prior.

"Emily," Richard rasped, his voice filled with a profound, crushing humility. "I... I don't know what to say. I ruined everything. I let a snake into my home, and I blamed the only person who actually cared about my children."

Emily looked at him quietly. "You didn't just ruin your company, Mr. Hawthorne. You broke your children's trust. Money can be rebuilt. But the look in Ethan’s eyes when he screamed at you today? That takes years to heal."

Richard dropped his head, unable to meet her gaze. "I know. God help me, I know."

"Mr. Hawthorne," Arthur interrupted, looking at his iPad. "We need to go to the mansion immediately. If Victoria used your home network to initiate the transfer, the physical drive in your private study might still contain the local access logs. If we can secure those logs before her lawyers wipe the drive remotely, we can prove the signature was forged."

"The study is locked with a biometric scanner," Richard said, rubbing his eyes. "Only my footprint and Victoria’s digital pass key can unlock it. If she initiated a remote lock, the system is completely shut down."

Emily suddenly paused. "The study? The one behind the library bookcase?"

Richard looked up, surprised. "Yes. How do you know about that?"

"Victoria didn't use the biometric scanner," Emily said calmly, reaching into her uniform pocket. "She didn't need to."

She pulled out a small, heavy silver key attached to a worn leather strap and held it out toward Richard.

Richard stared at the key in shock. "Where did you get that? That's the manual override key for the mansion's main security node! I lost that two years ago!"

"You didn't lose it," Emily replied flatly. "Clara gave it to me three days before she passed away."
