Chapter 3 - Emergency Room Confessions

The pediatric emergency room was bathed in harsh fluorescent light.

The smell of antiseptic filled the air as two nurses carefully cleaned the cuts on Ethan, Noah, and Liam’s arms and feet. Through it all, the triplets refused to let go of Emily. Even while the doctor administered local anesthesia to stitch a deep gash on Noah’s forearm, the boy kept his eyes locked on Emily’s face, holding her hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Richard stood in the corner of the room, leaning against the pale blue wall.

He looked entirely out of place. His thousand-dollar suit was stained with dirt and dried blood, his expensive hair uncombed, and his phone—which usually buzzed every thirty seconds with multi-million-dollar trade notifications—sat completely silent in his pocket. He hadn't touched it once since they arrived.

He watched Emily.

He watched how she gently sang a soft, familiar lullaby into Ethan’s ear to distract him from the needle. He watched how she pulled tiny, invisible splinters from Liam's toes with calm, practiced patience. He watched how his sons relaxed under her touch, trusting her entirely to protect them from the pain.

A memory flashed through Richard’s mind—a memory from two years ago, shortly after his wife, Clara, had passed away.

He remembered sitting in his study, overwhelmed by grief and the mountain of corporate debt left behind after Clara’s medical battles. He remembered hiring Emily through a high-end staffing agency simply because her resume was clean. He had expected a quiet employee who kept the house clean.

He had never expected a woman who would quietly stay up until 3:00 AM rocking three screaming infants so he could sleep before a critical morning board meeting.

“She’s just a servant, Richard,” Victoria’s voice echoed in his memory, a poisonous whisper she had repeated over and over for the past year. “She’s overstepping her boundaries. She’s trying to make the boys dependent on her so you can’t fire her. You need a real, high-society woman to raise your heirs.”

And he had listened. He had let Victoria gradually push Emily into the background, stripping away her responsibilities, reducing her to a mere housekeeper, until finally... he had allowed her to be framed and discarded like trash.

"Mr. Hawthorne?"

The pediatric doctor stepped into the room, snapping Richard out of his trance.

"How are they, Doctor?" Richard asked immediately, stepping forward.

"Physical injuries are stable," the doctor said, looking over his clipboard with a stern, non-judgmental expression. "The cuts were shallow for the most part, though Noah required four stitches on his wrist. What concerns me more, Mr. Hawthorne, are the secondary signs."

Richard frowned. "Secondary signs?"

"The boys show signs of mild, chronic malnutrition and psychological stress," the doctor stated flatly. "Their weight percentiles have dropped fifteen percent over the last six months. Furthermore, when I conducted the basic physical exam, I noted severe bruising on their upper arms that did not occur today. Those bruises are several days old, consistent with being grabbed forcefully by an adult."

Richard felt the ground tilt beneath his feet. "Bruising? Malnutrition? That's impossible! We have a private chef! They have a full medical team—"

"A medical team that Victoria hired six months ago," Emily’s quiet voice cut through the room.

Richard turned to look at her. She was sitting on the edge of the examination bed, gently stroking Ethan’s hair as the boy drifted off to sleep.

"What do you mean, Emily?" Richard asked, his voice shaking.

"Every time you went on an international business trip," Emily said, looking him dead in the eye, "Victoria cancelled the boys' regular meals. She told the chef to prepare strict, low-calorie diets because she claimed they were 'becoming overweight and undisciplined.' When I tried to give them extra food from the pantry, she threatened to fire me on the spot."

"Why didn't you tell me?!" Richard stepped closer, his chest heaving. "Why didn't you call me?!"

"I DID!" Emily snapped, her voice breaking with an anger she could no longer contain. "I left three notes on your desk in October! I tried to talk to you in your study before you left for Tokyo! But every time I approached you, Victoria was there. She intercepted your mail, Richard! She answered your personal phone! And whenever I did manage to say something, you dismissed me! You told me, 'Victoria is managing the household now, Emily. Know your place.'"

Richard stood paralyzed as her words hit him like physical blows.

It was true. He remembered those exact words. He had said them casually while reviewing financial spreadsheets, completely oblivious to the silent torture occurring under his own roof.

Before Richard could speak, his phone suddenly vibrated vigorously in his pocket.

He pulled it out, intending to silence it, but stopped when he saw the caller ID. It wasn't Victoria. It was his Chief Information Officer, Marcus.

Richard answered, his tone icy. "Marcus, I told you I am dealing with an emergency—"

"Richard, turn on the news right now!" Marcus screamed over the line, his voice drowned out by the sound of sirens and chaotic shouting in the background. "The servers at the central data hub just underwent a catastrophic wipe! Our entire proprietary AI algorithm—the core asset for Monday’s IPO—has been leaked online!"

Richard’s blood ran cold. "What?"

"And that's not all!" Marcus panicked. "Victoria Lane’s father just filed an emergency injunction with the SEC, claiming your company stole the algorithm from their firm! They’re using your signed authorization documents to freeze all our corporate accounts!"

Richard stared at the phone screen in utter disbelief.

Victoria hadn't just tried to get rid of Emily to isolate the children. The stolen watch, the frame-up, the panic—it had all been a carefully timed distraction to keep Richard away from his office while her family executed a multi-billion-dollar corporate heist.

And he had played right into her hands.
