Chapter 3 - Laura’s Shattered World

Back at the colonial home on Maple Ridge Drive, the silence of the night felt suffocating. Laura sat at the kitchen island under the dim amber glow of a single pendant light. The house that had once felt like a sanctuary now felt like a tomb built on lies.
Noah was finally asleep upstairs, tucked into his bed under the care of a trusted family friend and a social worker.
Laura’s laptop sat open in front of her. Daniel’s laptop. He had left it behind on the study desk when the police arrived. Driven by a desperate need to understand the magnitude of the betrayal, Laura had brought it into the kitchen and cracked the password using an old anniversary date he had long since forgotten.
The screen illuminated her pale face.
She opened his email client. There were hundreds of messages, neatly archived in a hidden folder labeled M.B.
Laura began to read.
The earliest emails, dated six months ago, revealed a chilling reality. Mia hadn’t run away after stealing money from the family—that was a lie Daniel had fabricated and fed to Laura and her parents. In truth, Mia had discovered that Daniel was embezzling funds from the family business accounts, and when she threatened to expose him, he had isolated her, manipulated her, and eventually forced her onto the property under the threat of destroying her reputation and cutting her off from her family.
As the months progressed, the tone of the emails shifted from coercion to outright captivity.
“You will stay in the guesthouse,” one email from Daniel read. “You will not leave, you will not call my wife, and you will keep your mouth shut until this child is born. If you try to run, you know what I’ll do to your parents’ business.”
Another email, sent just three days prior, made Laura’s stomach heave: “The baby will be integrated into our household. Laura is already pregnant with our second; she won't question an extra infant if we frame it right. You are nothing, Mia. Just an incubator.”
Laura covered her mouth to stifle a sob. The man she had loved, the man who had held her hand through her own pregnancy, the man who kissed her forehead every morning before work—he was a monster who had systematically destroyed her sister’s life right under her nose.
A sudden flash of headlights cut through the kitchen window.
Laura stood up slowly, walking to the back door as the crunch of tires on gravel announced the return of the police cruisers.
Through the frosted glass of the back door, she saw Detective Cruz stepping out of a muddy unmarked car, accompanied by two paramedics wheeling a stretcher covered in thermal blankets.
Laura swung the door open, the cold night wind whipping her hair across her face.

“Did you find her?” Laura whispered, her voice cracking.
Elena stepped up onto the porch, her expression grim, exhausted, and heavy with sorrow.
