Chapter 7 - The Anatomy of a Secret

While Laura walked out into the crisp morning air, Detective Elena Cruz was busy coordinating the second wave of search warrants with federal investigators. The arrest of Daniel Miller had blown the lid off a much larger financial operation.
In the conference room, charts and financial ledgers were pinned across the whiteboard.
“It wasn't just embezzlement from the family business,” Miller’s former business partner, a nervous middle-aged man named Arthur Pendelton, told Elena across the table. “Daniel was running a sophisticated corporate shell company network using fake employee identities and fictitious maintenance contracts to siphon over two million dollars from municipal development grants.”
Elena flipped through the printed bank statements. “And Mia found out about it?”
“Accidentally,” Arthur nodded, rubbing his sweaty palms together. “She was helping organize the corporate archive room downtown six months ago when she stumbled across the ledger drafts. She confronted Daniel, threatening to go straight to the board and to Laura. That’s when he panicked. He abducted her, hid her in the guesthouse under the guise of ‘protecting her from her own mental health issues,’ and started the rumor that she had run off with stolen cash.”
“He turned a financial crime into a human tragedy,” Elena said disgustedly, tossing the file onto the table. “And he almost got away with it by hiding her in plain sight.”
“People see what they expect to see, Detective,” Arthur sighed. “Daniel was the pillar of the community. Nobody ever suspected that the nice suburban husband with the pristine lawn was running a prison camp in his own backyard.”
Elena’s phone buzzed on the table. It was a direct text from Dr. Naomi Grant at Westbridge Medical Center.

“Mia is awake. And she’s asking for you and Laura.”
Elena stood up immediately, grabbing her jacket off the back of the chair. “Wrap up these financial exhibits, Arthur. We’re heading to the hospital.”
