Chapter 8 - The Hospital Crisis

The sterile white walls of the intensive care unit at Westbridge Medical Center offered a stark contrast to the dark, damp tobacco barn where Mia had been found hours earlier.

Mia lay propped up against a bank of white pillows, an IV line taped securely to the back of her hand, a nasal cannula delivering supplemental oxygen. Her face was still terribly pale, but her eyes—once glassy and vacant—now held a fierce, fragile spark of life.

Laura sat beside the bed, holding a warm cup of broth to Mia’s lips, while Noah sat quietly in a chair in the corner, clutching his stuffed rabbit.

The door opened softly, and Detective Elena Cruz stepped into the room, followed closely by Daniel’s former business partner, Arthur, who had agreed to provide a formal, recorded witness statement regarding the corporate embezzlement cover-up.

“Mia,” Elena said gently, stopping at the foot of the bed. “How are you feeling?”

“Stronger,” Mia whispered, her voice rough and raspy. “The nurse... she told me the baby is doing well. They have her in an incubator down the hall.”

“She’s a fighter, Mia. Just like her mother,” Laura said, smiling through her tears as she stroked her sister's hair.

Mia looked over at Noah, who offered a shy, hesitant wave. “Thank you, Noah,” she whispered. “You saved our lives tonight.”

Noah blushed, looking down at his shoes. “I just wanted the baby to be safe.”

“You did more than that, Noah,” Elena added, walking closer to the bed. “You blew the whole conspiracy wide open. Daniel Miller is locked in a federal holding cell, and he’s never getting out.”

Mia closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure liberation. The invisible chains that had bound her for six months had finally been shattered.

“There’s one more thing, Mia,” Arthur Pendelton said nervously from the doorway, stepping forward with a digital recorder. “Your testimony regarding the corporate accounts... combined with the physical documents we recovered from Daniel’s office safe... means the federal prosecutors have an airtight case. You won't just be reclaiming your life; you’ll be exposing the entire corrupt enterprise.”

“I’ll testify to anything,” Mia said firmly, her voice gaining strength with every word. “I want him to pay for what he did to me. For what he did to my baby.”
