Chapter 5 - The Neighbor’s Ring Camera

Back at the precinct, Detective Elena Cruz sat across from Miller’s defense attorney, a sharp-suited corporate lawyer named Harrison Vance who had arrived twenty minutes prior demanding Daniel’s immediate release.

“You are holding my client on baseless speculation, Detective,” Harrison said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “There is no physical evidence placing Mr. Miller in the guesthouse during the birth, and my client maintains his absolute innocence regarding any confinement.”

Elena didn’t blink. She slid a sleek tablet across the metal table, pressing play on a high-definition video file.

“That’s funny, Harrison,” Elena said evenly. “Because about an hour ago, my technical squad pulled footage from the Ring doorbell camera belonging to the Hendersons—the neighbors who live directly across the private lane from the Miller estate.”

On the tablet screen, the infrared night-vision footage displayed the rear perimeter of the Miller guesthouse. The timestamp read 11:45 PM—just thirty minutes before Noah walked into the police station.

The back door of the guesthouse opened.

A tall figure stepped out into the snow flurries. He was wearing a distinctive dark wool coat with a velvet collar—the exact same coat currently hanging in Daniel Miller’s front hall closet.

In his arms, the figure was carrying a bundled white towel, holding it awkwardly against his chest as he hurried across the frozen grass toward the main house, before stopping, handing the bundle through the window to someone waiting inside, and then retreating.

Harrison Vance stared at the tablet screen, his arrogant expression freezing solid. The video played on loop, showing Daniel Miller’s face illuminated clearly by the motion-activated porch light as he glanced nervously over his shoulder.

“That... that could be digitally manipulated,” Harrison stammered, though his voice lacked any real conviction.

“We pulled the raw data file straight off Amazon’s cloud servers with a federal subpoena,” Elena said coldly, standing up from her chair. “Along with digital forensic matches of Daniel’s email account threatening Mia, and DNA evidence currently being processed from the guesthouse cradle. Your client isn't walking out of here, Harrison. He’s going straight from this holding cell to an arraignment before Judge Shaw.”

Elena walked out of the interrogation room, leaving the defense attorney staring in stunned silence at the glowing screen.
