Chapter 12 - The Zurich Cipher-12

Forty-eight hours later, Michael and I touched down at Zurich Airport under a blanket of heavy, gray alpine fog.
We drove a rental SUV through the winding mountain roads above Lake Zurich, arriving at The Birchwood Clinic—a secluded, ultra-luxurious stone estate surrounded by high wrought-iron fences and dense pine forests.
Using authorization codes provided by our European legal partners and an official Interpol advisory regarding Dr. Thorne’s fugitive warrant, we met with the clinic’s chief administrator in a private conference room.
"Dr. Thorne was admitted fourteen months ago under a false identity," the administrator explained, setting a medical file on the glass table. "He suffers from advanced paranoid dementia. He rarely speaks, but when he does... he repeats a single phrase over and over."
"What phrase?" Michael asked, leaning forward.
The administrator opened the file. "He keeps saying: 'The third ledger is under the lake. The third ledger belongs to the mother.'"
Michael and I exchanged a sharp, knowing look.
Marcus Vale’s red ledger had detailed political bribes in Illinois. Daniel’s blue ledger had detailed corporate fraud within Vance Development.
Buried deep within the original corporate filings from thirty years ago was a reference to a Green Ledger—the founding ledger of my father’s original partner, containing the international trust allocations established before Daniel ever entered our lives.
We were led down a quiet, carpeted hallway to Dr. Thorne’s private room.
Sitting in a wheelchair by a large arched window overlooking the foggy lake was an frail, white-haired man staring blankly into the mist.
I stepped closer, kneeling beside his chair.
"Dr. Thorne," I said softly. "I am Claire Harper. Richard Harper’s daughter."
The old man’s hands twitched violently. His foggy gray eyes slowly turned toward my face.
A spark of sudden, terrified recognition flashed deep within his pupils.
"Claire..." he gasped, his voice a dry, papery whisper. "Richard's little girl... you... you survived..."
"Who put you here, Dr. Thorne?" I asked gently. "Was it Julian Cole?"
"Julian... took the keys..." Dr. Thorne stammered, his fingers clutching my sleeve with surprising strength. "He... he worked for her... all along... not Marcus... not Daniel..."
My heart skipped a beat. "Worked for whom, Dr. Thorne?"
May you like
Dr. Thorne leaned in close, his hot, trembling breath against my ear, whispering a name that made the blood in my veins turn to ice.
"Evelyn... Evelyn Vance... Daniel’s mother..."
