Chapter 6 - The Sovereign Monster-6

With Vanessa in federal custody and Daniel facing forty years in federal prison, the surface layer of my revenge was complete.

But the real threat—the man who held the strings above them both—remained untouched in his high-rise fortress on North Lake Shore Drive.

Marcus Vale was not a man who fought in courtrooms. He owned three private security firms, two offshore banks, and had enough leverage on state officials to make murder investigations disappear overnight.

That evening, Michael, Evelyn, and I gathered in the command room of the Lake Forest cottage.

"Vale knows Vanessa was picked up," Michael said, bringing up architectural blueprints of Vale’s private penthouse. "He's closing his operations in Chicago. His private helicopter is scheduled to pick him up from the helipad on top of his building at midnight."

"If he leaves the country, we'll never extradite him," Evelyn noted, flipping through legal briefs. "He holds dual citizenship in a non-extradition nation in South America."

"He won't leave without the black master ledger," I said, pointing at the blueprint. "The physical ledger that records every cash payment made to judges and city inspectors over the last fifteen years. It's stored in a biological-scan vault inside his penthouse study."

Michael looked at me, eyebrow raised. "And how do you know that?"

"Because five years ago, when Daniel forced me to attend Marcus Vale's annual charity gala at that very penthouse, Vale took me into his study to show off his collection of rare manuscripts," I revealed. "He thought I was just a naive house-wife. He bragged about his security system, showing me the vault mechanism disguised behind a 17th-century oil painting."

"Did he show you the override code?" Michael asked.

"He didn't need to," I smiled faintly. "He used a classic alphanumeric cipher based on his daughter's birthdate—a detail I memorized before dessert was served."

Michael chuckled, shaking his head in admiration. "You are terrifying, Claire."

"I am a mother whose child was threatened," I corrected coldly. "That makes me far more dangerous than any soldier."

Suddenly, the house alarm chimed softly.

The perimeter security cameras showed a sleek gray sedan pulling up to the outer gate of our property.

A single driver stepped out, holding a white envelope under the glare of the security spotlight. He placed the envelope in our mailbox, returned to the car, and sped away into the darkness.

Michael retrieved the envelope using tactical gloves, scanning it for explosive residues before bringing it into the room.

Inside was a single handwritten note written on heavy parchment paper, stamped with Marcus Vale’s personal seal.

Mrs. Vance,

You have conducted an impressive campaign against your incompetent husband and his ambitious mistress. But you are playing in a league you do not understand.

Come to my penthouse at ten o'clock tonight. Alone. Bring the blue ledgers you stole from Daniel's cloud server.

If you involve the police or your brother-in-law, the medical trust providing Noah's specialized cardiac medication will be permanently revoked, and the clinical trial keeping him alive will cease operations by morning.

Choose wisely.

Marcus Vale

I stared at the note, my heart pounding against my ribs like a sledgehammer.

He hadn't just attacked my finances or my husband. He was holding my son's life-saving medical access hostage.

May you like

I looked at Michael, whose face had darkened into an expression of pure, murderous rage.

"He just made the biggest mistake of his life," Michael growled, loading a magazine into his sidearm. "We aren't just taking his ledger, Claire. We are burning his entire empire to the ground tonight."
