Chapter 5 - The Runway Trap-5

The sky over O'Hare International Airport was heavy with gray storm clouds as rain lashed across the tarmac of the private aviation terminal.
Inside the luxurious VIP lounge, Vanessa Cole sat on a white leather sofa, holding a glass of champagne, her diamond bracelet sparkling under the recessed lighting. She was dressed in an expensive trench coat, her designer luggage stacked near the door.
She kept checking her gold watch, her eyes nervously darting toward the glass doors leading to the private Gulfstream jet idling on the tarmac.
"Five minutes, Miss Cole," the pilot announced, stepping into the lounge. "Air traffic control has cleared our departure slot."
Vanessa let out a long breath of relief, setting her champagne glass down. "Thank God. Let's get out of this miserable city."
She stood up, grabbed her handbag, and walked toward the glass doors.
Suddenly, the lights inside the lounge flickered and went out, plunging the room into shadow.
The automated glass doors hissed shut and locked with a heavy magnetic click.
"What's going on?!" Vanessa demanded, turning around in panic. "Fix the lights!"
The massive flat-screen television on the lounge wall flickered to life, glowing brightly in the dark room.
On the screen was not an airline schedule, but a live video feed from a interrogation room inside the Cook County Jail.
Sitting at a cold metal table, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and holding a telephone receiver behind thick glass, was Daniel.
Beside him stood Evelyn Hart, holding a speakerphone connected directly to the lounge's sound system.
"Vanessa?" Daniel's voice boomed through the lounge speakers, trembling with rage and heartbreak. "Vanessa, are you there?!"
Vanessa stumbled back, her face turning pale. "Daniel... how are you calling me?!"
"I'm calling you from jail, you lying snake!" Daniel roared over the audio feed. "You told me you were going to New York to secure legal help for me! You took the bearer bonds from the safe!"
Vanessa composed herself quickly, her eyes cold, dropping all pretenses. "Oh, please, Daniel. Did you really think I was going to stay here and go to prison for you? You were just a convenient tool with a company stamp. You weren't smart enough to run Vance Development, and you certainly weren't smart enough to keep your wife from taking everything."
On the television screen, Daniel's face twisted into an expression of utter devastation. "I gave you everything! I left my family for you! I transferred six million dollars to your brother's company!"
"And my brother gave four million of it to Marcus Vale to secure my future," Vanessa scoffed, walking up to the screen with a cruel laugh. "You were just the middleman, Daniel. A pathetic, desperate middleman who thought a cheap suit and a diamond bracelet made him a king. Goodbye, Daniel. Enjoy your sentence."
Vanessa turned to leave, but the heavy glass doors remained locked.
Behind her, two federal agents in dark raincoats stepped out from the shadows of the VIP corridor, holding arrest warrants signed by a federal judge.
"Vanessa Cole," the lead agent announced, flashing his badge. "You are under arrest for federal money laundering, conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice."
Vanessa’s champagne glass slipped from her hand, shattering against the tile floor.
On the screen, Daniel watched as the woman he had destroyed his life for was thrown against the glass wall and forced into steel handcuffs, screaming obscenities as her four-million-dollar escape vanished into thin air.
I stepped out from behind the security desk near the entrance, holding a microphone.
I looked at Daniel through the video monitor.
"You traded your son, your father's memory, and your home for that, Daniel," I said softly into the microphone. "How does it feel to be completely bankrupt in every way that matters?"
Daniel stared at me through the screen, tears pouring down his face, his voice barely a whimper.
"Claire... please..." he begged. "Save me... please..."

"I saved myself, Daniel," I replied. "And I saved our son. Have a nice life."
I switched off the screen, leaving him alone in the dark.
