Chapter 2 - The Wiretap and the Web-2

We arrived at our safehouse—a quiet, stone cottage nestled in a private forested plot near Lake Forest, registered under an obscure charitable trust my father had established thirty years ago.
After tucking Noah into a warm, sunlit bedroom upstairs and locking the biometric security gates surrounding the perimeter, I descended into the basement.
The room was set up like a war room. Three monitors glowed in the dark, displaying financial spreadsheets, asset maps, and live audio feeds from Daniel’s personal vehicle, his penthouse office, and the luxury condo he had secretly bought for Vanessa Cole on Michigan Avenue.
I put on my headset just in time to hear Vanessa’s panicked voice piercing through the static.
"What do you mean she froze the accounts?!" Vanessa shrieked, the sound echoing off the bare walls of her condo. "Daniel, I have two hundred thousand dollars in vendor invoices clearing tomorrow morning for the charity gala! My brother’s company needs that wire transfer!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel barked back, his breathing ragged. I heard the clink of ice against glass. He was drinking heavily. "She left a photograph. A photo of us at the Drake with Marcus Vale."
Silence filled the line. When Vanessa spoke again, her tone had lost all its playful, condescending charm. It turned razor-sharp, cold, and calculated.
"Did she take the black binder from your wall safe?" she asked quietly.
"I... I haven't checked," Daniel stammered. "Why would she know the combination?"
"Because she was a forensic accountant, you idiot!" Vanessa screamed. "You told me she was just a house-wife who cooked your meals! If she has that binder, Marcus will have us both liquidated before the sun comes up! Get back to the house and check the safe now!"
Listening to them unravel was intoxicating, but my trained eye was focused on a different screen.
I opened the digital ledger files I had extracted from Daniel’s cloud server weeks prior. I ran a cross-referencing algorithm matching Vance Development's payment entries against Marcus Vale's shell entities: Kensington Import-Export, Aegis Security Solutions, and Crestview Holdings.
Every time Daniel issued a subcontracting payment to Vanessa’s brother, a corresponding transfer was made forty-eight hours later to an offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands.
But then I saw an anomaly—a line item that didn't make sense.
Six million dollars had been routed through Vance Development three years ago, during the exact week my father suddenly collapsed at his desk from an apparent "heart attack."
My hands began to shake as I pulled up the digitized coroner's report from my father’s file.
At the time, I was eight months pregnant with Noah, overwhelmed with grief, and trusted Daniel completely when he handled the funeral arrangements and the transfer of my father’s business shares. I had signed whatever documents he put in front of me because my heart was breaking and my unborn child needed medical intervention.
I opened the toxicology appendix that had been buried under three layers of administrative seals in the county archives—an appendix I had only managed to bypass yesterday using my old law-enforcement credentials.
Substance detected: Digitalis glycoside derivative.
My father hadn't died of natural causes. He had been slowly poisoned over a six-month period.
And the person who had prepared his daily afternoon tea during those six months was Daniel.
I closed my eyes, leaning back against the leather chair, a cold, unyielding fire igniting deep within my chest.
"He didn't just steal my life," I whispered into the empty, glowing room. "He murdered my father to take the company."

I opened my phone, dialed Evelyn’s private line, and spoke three words that would escalate my revenge into an absolute war.
"Release Phase Two."
