Chapter 12 - The Target on Our BacksFor the next two weeks, my life transformed into a whirlwind of shadow operations and high-stakes intelligence gathering. I wasn't just a former federal agent anymore; I was the ghost in the machine, operating inside Marcus Blackwood's syndicate to dismantle the corrupt federal network from the inside out.

By day, I helped Lily with her schoolwork, taught her advanced sign language vocabulary, and watched the heavy, haunted shadow slowly lift from her bright eyes. By night, I sat in the subterranean command center alongside Marcus and his top commanders, mapping out the infiltration of the Department of Justice database.
But enemies do not sleep.
Late one Thursday night, while the rest of the estate was quiet, the red emergency alarm on our mainframe suddenly flared to life.
Warning: External Intrusion Detected. Mainframe Firewall Breach at Sector 4.
I slammed my fingers across the keyboard, pulling up the external security feeds. On the monitors, three unmarked black vans had just rammed through the outer security gates of the Blackwood estate. Heavy tactical units, wearing unmarked black combat gear and carrying suppressed submachine guns, swarmed out of the vehicles, moving with terrifying, military-grade precision.
"Federal strike team," I said, my blood turning to ice. "They traced the data ping from our last hack into the DOJ server."

Marcus stepped up behind me, his face carved from granite. He didn't panic. He didn't flinch. He reached into his coat and drew a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, pulling back the slide with a sharp, lethal metallic click.
"They think they've cornered a mob boss," Marcus said coldly, his eyes reflecting the flashing red emergency lights. "They have no idea they just walked into a slaughterhouse."
