Chapter 15 - A New Dawn in ChicagoThree months later, the headlines in the Chicago Tribune sent shockwaves through the entire political and criminal landscape of the United States.

A massive federal corruption scandal had exploded into the public light. Leaked classified documents—funneled anonymously to independent investigative journalists—exposed a secret cabal of high-ranking Department of Justice officials, federal directors, and corporate executives who had orchestrated illegal arms trafficking and political assassinations for over a decade. Warrants were issued, arrests were made, and the corrupt empire collapsed from the inside out.

The federal agents who had tried to raid the Blackwood estate were publicly disgraced, their covert operations dismantled by their own internal affairs office.

And in the heart of Chicago, the underworld shifted on its axis. Marcus Blackwood remained at the top, but the nature of his empire had changed. The ruthless mafia boss had transformed into a legend—a man who had waged war against the corrupt state and won, not with blind violence, but with truth, strategy, and an unbreakable alliance.

Inside the sunlit courtyard of the Blackwood estate, the morning air was crisp and clean.

I sat at a white wrought-iron table, reviewing financial briefs on my tablet. The old suitcase under my bed was gone, replaced by a secure laptop and a new life that was entirely my own.

Footsteps approached behind me.

I looked up to see Marcus walking across the stone patio, holding two cups of black coffee. He handed one to me, taking a seat in the chair opposite mine.

"The federal prosecutor officially closed the investigation into your past identity this morning," Marcus said, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. "You are completely off the grid, Agent Miller. Or... whatever name you choose to go by now."

"Hannah," I said softly, taking a sip of the hot coffee. "Just Hannah is fine."

Across the courtyard, Lily was sitting on a wooden swing under the shade of a grand oak tree, laughing brightly as she played with a small golden retriever puppy Marcus had bought her for her birthday. For the first time in three years, a clear, sweet sound drifted across the garden—a soft, melodic giggle that made the heavy shadows of the past completely vanish.

Marcus watched his daughter, his dark eyes softening with a profound, quiet peace.

"You saved her, Hannah," Marcus murmured, looking back at me. "You saved both of us."

I set my coffee cup down on the table, looking out at the sunlit horizon where the sprawling skyline of Chicago stretched endlessly into the bright blue sky.

"We saved each other," I replied, offering him a genuine smile.

And for the first time in a very long time, I knew I was exactly where I belonged.
