Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the PastI retreated to the kitchen, my hands shaking as I gripped the edge of the stainless-steel prep table.

Mr. Ross rushed over, his face flushed with panic and anger. "Are you insane?! Do you have a death wish?! That is Marcus Blackwood! You don't approach his table, and you certainly don't start communicating with his family!"

"She dropped her glass, Mr. Ross," I said evenly, forcing my voice to remain calm. "I was just cleaning it up."

"You signed to her!" Ross hissed, grabbing a rag and aggressively wiping down a clean counter. "Everyone in this city knows how protective he is. You’ve probably put a target on your own back. Just... stay out of his sight for the rest of the night. Do your job and disappear."

I nodded, turning away. But I knew disappearing wouldn't be that easy anymore.

When my shift finally ended at midnight, I slipped out through the back alley exit, pulling my wool coat tightly around my neck against the biting Chicago wind. The alley was dark, lit only by a flickering yellow streetlamp that cast long, distorted shadows across the asphalt.

I hurried toward my apartment three blocks away, my boots clicking rhythmically against the pavement. But as I turned the corner onto my street, a sleek, black sedan was parked directly in front of my building.

The rear door opened slowly.

Two armed guards stepped out, blocking my path, while a tall, imposing figure emerged from the back seat.

Marcus Blackwood.
