Chapter 11 - WHAT “W PRESENT” MEANT Weston claimed he had been present for three confiscations.

Not the destruction.

According to him:

Harlan removed a toy.

Placed it in the shed.

Weston let it happen.

Later he told Harlan to return it after a few days.

Harlan sometimes said he had.

Weston never checked.

“Why didn’t Cecily tell me?”

I asked during our first mediated conversation.

Weston looked ashamed.

“Dad told her not to turn you against him.”

“What did you tell her?”

He closed his eyes.

“When she complained to me, I said Grandpa has different rules.”

I stared.

“Different rules.”

“Yes.”

“You gave a five-year-old the impression this was an adult disagreement she had to tolerate.”

“I know.”

“No. You know now.”

He flinched.

Good.

I wanted him to.

That was not my finest emotion.
