Chapter 22 - CECILY GETS HER TOYS BACK The toys were returned after investigators documented them.

We did not give Cecily everything at once.
Her therapist suggested choice.
So I placed the bins in the garage.
Not Harlan’s labels.
New plain containers.
I asked:
“Do you want to see?”
She said:
“Is Pip there?”
“Yes.”
His ear was missing.
I warned her.
She looked.
Then cried.
Not because a stuffed rabbit is worth much.
Because somebody had deliberately altered something she loved.
“Can we fix him?”
“Yes.”
We did not make him perfect.
A seamstress at the dry cleaner attached a new ear made from similar fabric.
Slightly larger.
Cecily loved the crooked ear.
Molly survived the pool too.
Her painted eye never looked right again.
Cecily refused a replacement.
