No police seizure needed for the family case at first; he voluntarily produced relevant messages to the evaluator and later discovery covered them.
Four months earlier:
Harlan:
She cried twenty minutes after Nadine left again. Took the fox.
Weston:
Dad, don’t go overboard.
Harlan:
Nothing else works because Nadine gives in.
Weston:
Keep it to toys. No hands.
My breathing stopped when I read that.
No hands.
Meaning Weston had considered the possibility.
Then:
Harlan:
You survived me.
Weston:
That’s not the argument you think it is.
I almost felt relief.
Then another message two weeks later.
Harlan:
Rabbit went in the shed today.
Weston:
Nadine is looking for that one.
Harlan:
Let her look.
Weston:
Just don’t destroy it.
Harlan:
Stop worrying.
Weston knew.
Not every detail.
Enough.
He had not created the system.
