Chapter 8 – The Poisoned Root

Six months after the arrests, the name Carter Holdings was officially erased from the corporate registry, replaced by Aria Global Logistics—named after the daughter who had survived the fall.
Ethan threw himself into rebuilding the enterprise from the ground up, purging every corrupt executive and offshore intermediary his father, Arthur Carter, had installed over forty years of ruthless control. But as the forensic accounting team dug deeper into the legacy archives, they hit a wall.
A sealed corporate trust, established thirty years prior in the Cayman Islands, contained a clause that caught the legal team off guard: Arthur had not built the empire alone. Forty percent of the original seed capital had been siphoned from a maternal trust belonging to Ethan’s late mother, Eleanor.
Eleanor hadn't died of sudden heart failure as Arthur had claimed when Ethan was eight.
Sitting in his high-rise office late one rainy Tuesday evening, Ethan read through the unsealed coroner's addendum provided by a private investigator. The original medical examiner had noted toxic levels of digitalis in Eleanor’s bloodstream, but the police file had been quietly buried under Arthur’s political influence.
Ethan’s phone vibrated on the glass desk. An encrypted voice message from the state penitentiary where Arthur was awaiting sentencing.
Ethan pressed play. His father’s voice was raspy, stripped of its former grandeur, but still laced with venom:
"You think you won because you put Derek in a cage, Ethan? Look into your mother’s will. The real money was never meant for you. If you don't drop the civil forfeiture suits against my hidden accounts, the silent partner will come to collect what’s theirs."

Ethan stared out over the glittering city skyline, his jaw clenched tight.
Arthur wasn't acting alone from behind bars. There was another player in the shadows—someone who had helped destroy Ethan’s mother and was now preparing to strike at Aria and Olivia.
