Chapter 9 – The Silent Partner
The warning became reality forty-eight hours later.
A sudden, aggressive hostile takeover bid hit Aria Global Logistics on the foreign exchange markets, backed by a shadowy private equity fund registered as Vanguard Crest. Within four trading hours, twenty-two percent of the company’s floating shares were swallowed up by shell corporations operating out of Zurich and Singapore.
At the center of Vanguard Crest sat a name Ethan had never heard: Victoria Vance.
Ethan called an emergency security meeting at the family estate, having long since upgraded the property with state-of-the-art surveillance and private armed personnel. Olivia sat beside him at the dining table, holding seven-month-old Aria against her shoulder while reviewing corporate filings.
"Victoria Vance isn't just an investor," Olivia said, pointing to an old black-and-white society column from thirty years ago on her tablet screen. "Look at this photograph from the 1996 Charity Gala."
Ethan leaned in. Standing beside a young Arthur Carter was an elegant woman with sharp, piercing eyes.
"She was your mother's half-sister," Olivia whispered. "The family cut her out of Eleanor’s estate after a bitter dispute over the shipping docks. When Eleanor died, Victoria vanished overseas with millions in unregistered bearer bonds."
Before Ethan could process the revelation, the house’s intercom chimed. The chief of private security spoke through the line:
"Mr. Carter, a courier just delivered a package at the outer gate. It’s addressed directly to Mrs. Carter."
Ethan walked down to the security booth himself, took the velvet-lined box, and had the bomb-squad protocol sweep it before opening it in the security office.

Family debts do not expire with prison sentences. The boardroom at 9:00 AM tomorrow, Ethan. Come alone, or I liquidate the company and take everything Eleanor left behind.
