Part 13

The morning arrived with a crisp, cool fog that rolled in from the sea, blankets of white mist drifting through the pine trees.

Ava was the first to wake, opening her eyes to the soft, diffused light filling the bedroom.

She lay still for a moment, listening to the steady, even breathing of Daniel beside her.

His arm was draped protectively over her waist, even in his sleep, his instinct was always to keep her safe.

Gently, so as not to disturb him, she slipped out of bed and wrapped herself in a soft wool cardigan.

She walked out onto the deck, the cold air immediately waking her senses and clearing her mind.

This was her favorite time of day, when the world was still suspended between sleep and the waking world.

She took a deep breath, filling her lungs with the clean, salty air, a stark contrast to the sterile, medicine-tinged air of her old room.

For months, her body had been a prison, poisoned slowly by the person who was supposed to protect her.

Every step she took now was a quiet act of defiance against Margaret’s cruelty.

She walked down the wooden stairs, her feet sinking slightly into the damp, cool sand.

She walked slowly, focusing on the mechanics of her movement, the flex of her ankles, the strength in her knees.

The physical therapist had told her that her recovery was nothing short of miraculous, driven by pure willpower.

But Ava knew it wasn’t just willpower; it was the desperate desire to live a life worth living with the man she loved.

As she reached the shoreline, she saw a small figure walking toward her through the mist.

It was Rosa, wrapped in a thick shawl, holding two steaming mugs of coffee.

“I thought I might find you down here, Mrs. Ava,” Rosa said, handing her a mug with a gentle smile.

“You shouldn't be out here in the damp air without proper shoes.”

Ava laughed, a clear, ringing sound that echoed softly against the cliffs.

“I spent too many months trapped in shoes I couldn't use, Rosa. I want to feel everything now.”

Rosa nodded, her eyes shining with a mixture of respect and deep affection.

“You have earned the right to feel the earth beneath your feet, my dear. More than anyone I know.”

They stood together in silence, sipping their coffee, watching the fog slowly lift as the sun rose higher.

The orange rays broke through the mist, turning the gray water into a shimmering field of gold.

Ava looked back at the house, seeing Daniel standing on the deck, looking down at them with a look of pure devotion.

He waved, and Ava waved back, her heart swelling with a warmth that completely drove out the morning chill.

She knew that the scars on her body and mind would take time to fully fade.

There were still moments when a sudden loud noise would make her flinch, or a shadow would look like a threat.

But looking at Daniel, and looking at the vast, open ocean before her, she knew she had all the time in the world.

She began the walk back up the beach, her stride stronger and more confident with every passing step.
