Part 25

The next morning, the storm had completely passed, leaving behind a world that felt clean, sharp, and brand new.

A white delivery van drove up the winding gravel driveway, leaving a small package on the front porch.

Daniel walked out to retrieve it, noting the official legal seal of their attorney stamped on the top corner.

His heart gave a small, familiar thud of anxiety, a muscle memory from a time when mail always brought bad news.

He took a deep breath, letting the clean sea air calm his nerves before walking back inside to open it.

Ava was sitting at the kitchen island, watching him with an expression of quiet, steady calm that instantly grounded him.

He tore the envelope open, pulling out a thick stack of official legal documents and a short, handwritten note.

As his eyes scanned the text, the last remaining tension in his shoulders completely melted away, leaving him weightless.

"What is it, Daniel?" Ava asked, her voice gentle, completely devoid of the panic that used to define her.

Daniel looked up, a massive, liberating smile breaking across his handsome face as he handed her the letter.

"It’s over, Ava. It’s officially, legally, completely over," he said, his voice ringing with absolute triumph.

"The Connecticut estate has been liquidated. Every single asset belonging to the family has been sold off."

He stepped closer, taking her hands in his. "The court has finalized the permanent, non-appealable restraining orders."

"And Margaret’s final appeal was officially denied. She will spend the rest of her natural life in that facility."

Ava looked down at the paper, reading the cold, sterile legal words that represented the permanent death of their past.

The monster that had hunted them, the shadow that had haunted their dreams, was now nothing more than a legal file.

She didn't feel anger, she didn't feel hatred, and she didn't feel the desire for revenge anymore.

All she felt was a profound, beautiful emptiness where her fear used to live, a space now ready to be filled with life.

"We are free," she whispered, the words tasting sweet and foreign on her tongue as she looked up at him.

"We've been free for a year, my love," Daniel replied, pulling her into a deep, celebratory embrace.

"But today, the world finally caught up to us. There are no more strings connecting us to that dark place."
