Part 56

With a heavy silver pen, Alexander signed his name at the bottom of the parchment, the ink sealing our independence forever.

I took the pen next, adding my signature beside his, feeling an incredible lightness in my chest as the metal tip scratched across the paper.

Ethan and Sofia added their names as witnesses, completing the document that would serve as the foundational shield for our lineage.

Once the ink was completely dry, Alexander carefully rolled the parchment and placed it into a protective leather cylinder.

"I will have Thomas deliver this to the neutral drop point in the valley this afternoon," Alexander stated, his voice final.

With the legalities of our survival officially completed, the mood in the room shifted into something light, bright, and wonderfully normal.

Sofia picked Maya up from the bassinet, cradling the tiny girl against her chest with a natural grace that was beautiful to behold.

"Look at her, Mom," Sofia said softly, turning to me with a brilliant smile. "She has Alexander's eyes, completely clear and focused."

I leaned closer, looking into the deep, dark eyes of my granddaughter, seeing a future completely unburdened by the ghosts of our past.

She would never have to run in the middle of the night, nor would she ever have to learn how to hide her true identity from the world.

Alexander stood up, walking around the table to stand behind Sofia, looking down at his granddaughter with absolute devotion.

"She will learn how to ride horses in the meadow, and she will learn how to tend the gardens with her grandmother," he murmured.

His voice was thick with an emotion he rarely showed, a deep tenderness that made my own eyes fill with tears of pure happiness.

Ethan reached over, taking Sofia's free hand, their fingers intertwining in a silent promise of the beautiful life they were going to build.

The morning sun poured through the glass, bathing the entire room in a brilliant, golden warmth that felt like a heavenly blessing.
