Part 64

Later that night, after Sofia and Ethan had returned to their cottage on the ridge, the promised rain began to fall gently.

The sound of the soft droplets pattering against the glass windows of our bedroom was incredibly soothing, a peaceful lullaby.

I lay awake for a while, listening to the steady rhythm, feeling the profound comfort of the heavy goose-down duvet covering us.

Alexander lay beside me, his long arm wrapped securely around my waist, his breathing deep and even as he slept soundly.

In the past, rainy nights had always filled me with a deep anxiety, making me worry about muddy roads and compromised escape paths.

But now, the rain was no longer an obstacle to our survival; it was a beautiful gift from nature that nourished our livelihood.

I turned slightly, shifting closer to Alexander's side, resting my palm against the steady, rhythmic beat of his strong heart.

He stirred slightly at my movement, his arm tightening instinctively around me, pulling me closer into his protective warmth.

"Are you awake, my love?" he murmured, his voice deep and thick with sleep, his eyes opening just enough to see my face.

"Just listening to the rain," I whispered softly, reaching up to gently trace the familiar line of his jaw with my fingertips.

Alexander smiled in the darkness, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my forehead, his breath warm against my skin.

"Go to sleep, my beautiful wife," he whispered reassuringly, his voice a comforting anchor in the quiet, shadows of the room.

"The world is at peace, our children are safe in their home, and tomorrow is a brand new day that belongs entirely to us."

I closed my eyes, letting his words wash over me, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of security settle into my very bones.

Shielded by the strong walls of our estate and wrapped in the arms of the man I loved, I drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep.
