Chapter 13 – The Woman Who Called Herself My Mother

The smoke spread through William Hawthorne's study.

FBI agents formed a defensive circle around me.

Red laser sights danced across the walls.

No one fired.

Because the woman standing in the doorway wasn't holding a weapon.

She slowly removed her tactical helmet.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

Calm gray eyes.

She looked to be in her late fifties.

There was something strangely familiar about her face.

Not familiar because I had met her before.

Familiar because...

She resembled me.

Just enough to make my heart skip.

She smiled gently.

"Evelyn."

"I've waited thirty-two years to say your name."

William stepped in front of me.

"Not another step, Victoria."

So.

She had a name.

Victoria smiled sadly.

"It's been a long time, William."

"Leave."

"I can't."

"You lost that right years ago."

She looked past him.

Straight at me.

"My name is Victoria Hale."

Then she whispered the sentence that shattered the room.

"I'm the woman who raised you..."

"...for the first six months of your life."

Silence.

Every FBI agent looked toward William.

Nathan frowned.

"You told us she was adopted at birth."

William never took his eyes off Victoria.

"I lied."

My stomach tightened.

"Dad..."

He closed his eyes.

"I wanted you to have a normal childhood."

Victoria nodded slowly.

"He did."

"I won't deny that."

She took another careful step forward.

"No weapons."

"No tricks."

"I came alone."

Director Collins immediately spoke into his radio.

"Thermal scan."

Within seconds, a sniper answered.

"Confirmed."

"One subject."

"No visible weapons."

No one relaxed.

I looked at Victoria.

"If you're not here to fight..."

"Why are you here?"

She reached into her jacket.

Half the room raised their weapons.

Slowly...

She removed a small photograph.

She placed it on the floor.

Then stepped away.

"You deserve this."

William's face changed the instant he saw it.

"No..."

He whispered.

Victoria looked at him.

"I kept my promise."

I picked up the photograph.

It showed a tiny wooden cabin beside a lake.

A young woman held a baby.

Standing beside her...

Was William.

And the baby...

Was wearing the same sapphire pendant I now carried around my neck.

Only much smaller.

My hands trembled.

"Dad..."

"You were there."

William nodded.

"Every day."

Victoria quietly continued.

"You weren't abandoned."

"You weren't hidden because anyone stopped loving you."

"You were hidden because someone wanted to kill you."

Nathan frowned.

"Alexander?"

Victoria slowly shook her head.

"No."

"Not in the beginning."

The Real Beginning

William finally lowered his head.

"It's time."

He walked toward the fireplace.

Reached inside.

Pressed against one loose brick.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Inside rested another leather journal.

Much older than the others.

Across the front...

Only two words.

Evelyn File

I stared.

"You kept this?"

"Every day."

He answered softly.

He opened the first page.

A hospital photograph.

Then another.

Then handwritten notes.

Medical records.

Growth charts.

Every birthday.

Every vaccination.

Every drawing I'd made as a child.

William smiled sadly.

"I never missed anything."

Victoria's voice grew quieter.

"He didn't."

"He visited every month."

"Even when you couldn't remember him."

I looked between them.

"What are you talking about?"

William answered.

"For your first six months..."

"You couldn't stay with me."

"Alexander's people were everywhere."

"So..."

"I trusted Victoria."

Nathan looked completely confused.

"You trusted her?"

William nodded.

"With my daughter's life."

Victoria smiled faintly.

"I failed him."

"No."

William interrupted.

"You saved her."

The Betrayal

Director Collins stepped forward.

"If Victoria protected Evelyn..."

"Why is she working with Adrian now?"

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"I'm not."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

"I'm trying to stop him."

She looked directly at William.

"The same way I tried to stop Alexander."

The room became silent.

Victoria slowly removed a silver ring from her finger.

She handed it to Collins.

FBI forensics immediately examined it.

One agent looked up.

"It's authentic."

"What is it?"

"Former Federal Intelligence identification."

Everyone stared.

Victoria nodded.

"I worked undercover for eighteen years."

"My mission was to infiltrate Alexander Vaughn's network."

Nathan whispered,

"You're a federal agent?"

She smiled bitterly.

"I was."

Adrian's Lie

William frowned.

"Then why appear with Adrian?"

Victoria sighed.

"Because Adrian wanted you to think we were allies."

"He used my identity."

"I never agreed to help him."

Director Collins looked shocked.

"You've been presumed dead for fifteen years."

"I know."

"I stayed dead."

"It was the only way to stay close to Alexander."

She looked toward me again.

"Evelyn..."

"I came tonight because Adrian lied."

My heartbeat quickened.

"What lie?"

"He told you Project Phoenix was about you."

She shook her head.

"It wasn't."

"It was about your parents."

The room fell silent.

William slowly closed the journal.

Victoria continued.

"Your biological parents weren't scientists."

"They weren't government officials."

"They weren't spies."

"They were journalists."

I frowned.

"Journalists?"

"The best investigative reporters in the country."

"They uncovered Project Phoenix before anyone else."

"They gathered enough evidence to expose Alexander."

Nathan whispered,

"So Alexander had them killed."

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

The Last Recording

Victoria reached into her pocket again.

This time...

She removed an old cassette tape.

"My God..."

William whispered.

"You still have it."

She smiled.

"I promised."

Collins looked confused.

"What is that?"

"The last interview your parents ever recorded."

A technician quickly found an old cassette player inside the mansion.

Everyone gathered silently.

Victoria pressed Play.

Static.

Then...

A man's voice.

Warm.

Confident.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...our daughter is alive."

I couldn't breathe.

My biological father.

For the first time.

His voice.

The recording continued.

"If we fail..."

"Please tell Evelyn..."

"...we never stopped fighting to come home."

A woman began crying softly in the background.

Then she spoke.

"My beautiful girl..."

"If someone else raises you..."

"Love them."

"They're risking everything for you."

Tears blurred my vision.

William lowered his head.

Victoria quietly wiped her eyes.

Even Nathan looked away.

The tape suddenly crackled.

Another voice interrupted.

Cold.

Male.

"Recording located."

Gunshots.

Screaming.

Static.

The tape ended.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Finally...

Director Collins whispered,

"We can identify that voice."

The forensic technician looked up from his equipment.

His face had gone completely white.

"I already did."

"Who is it?"

The technician swallowed hard.

"It wasn't Alexander Vaughn."

Silence.

"It wasn't Adrian Vale either."

Everyone stared.

The technician slowly looked toward William.

"The man who ordered your parents killed..."

"...is currently inside this mansion."

The room exploded into chaos.

Every FBI agent reached for their weapon.

Every door slammed shut.

Someone inside Blackthorn Manor...

May you like

Had been waiting thirty-two years...

For this exact moment.
