Chapter 7 – The Woman Who Planned Everything

Nathan stood motionless.
The morality clause.
His own signature.
His own company.
Destroyed by the contract he had proudly insisted every executive sign.
The riding whip slipped from his fingers and struck the marble floor with a hollow crack.
No one picked it up.
No one would ever use it again.
Celeste was the first to speak.
"This is ridiculous."
Her voice regained a trace of confidence.
"You may own his company now..."
She looked directly at my father.
"...but you still don't have any proof that Nathan committed a crime."
My father smiled faintly.
"Don't I?"
She folded her arms.
"The security cameras were disconnected."
"The servants were dismissed."
"There are no witnesses."
Nathan's eyes brightened.
For a brief second...
Hope returned.
Then I reached up and unclasped the sapphire pendant from around my neck.
The room fell silent.
I placed it gently on the marble table.
Nathan frowned.
"The necklace?"
My father nodded to one of his security officers.
A technician stepped forward carrying a rugged black case.
He carefully placed the pendant inside a docking unit.
Within seconds...
A large television screen on the far wall lit up.
The recording began.
The image was crystal clear.
Not from a security camera.
From my chest.
The angle captured everything.
Nathan's face.
Celeste's smile.
The whip.
The blood.
Every word.
Every strike.
The room echoed with Nathan's own voice.
"Maybe now you'll finally remember your place."
Then Celeste's laughter.
"You missed two."
The technician fast-forwarded.
Another clip.
Nathan crouching in front of me.
"The security cameras are offline."
Another.
"I'll simply tell everyone you attacked Celeste."
Another.
"Who do you think they'll believe?"
The recording stopped.
Silence filled the grand hall.
Nathan stared at the screen as though it belonged to someone else.
His own voice sounded unfamiliar.
Cruel.
Cold.
Unrecognizable.
My father looked at him.
"You were correct."
Nathan frowned.
"The cameras inside this house were offline."
He picked up the pendant.
"But you forgot..."
"...my daughter has never been unprotected."
Celeste suddenly lunged toward the technician.
"Delete it!"
She never reached him.
Two security officers blocked her path instantly.
She screamed.
"You have no right to record us!"
Judge Samuel Briggs, who had quietly entered with my father's legal team moments earlier, finally spoke.
"You consented."
Everyone turned.
Nathan blinked.
"What?"
The judge adjusted his glasses.
"This residence is legally owned by Mrs. Ashford."
Nathan laughed.
"Impossible."
"I bought this house."
"No."
The judge calmly handed him another document.
"The property title."
Nathan scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
His breathing became uneven.
Owner:
Evelyn Ashford.
My maiden name.
Not Nathan's.
Not our joint names.
Mine.
"I don't understand."
"You signed every closing document."
"I know."
The judge nodded.
"As managing resident."
"Not owner."
Nathan looked desperately at me.
"You knew?"
"I paid for Blackthorn Manor."
I answered quietly.
"My father transferred the funds."
"You insisted your lawyers handle the paperwork."
"So I let them."
Nathan remembered.
Four years earlier...
He had been too busy celebrating the mansion to actually read the closing documents.
His attorneys had assured him everything was routine.
He signed.
Without asking questions.
"You tricked me."
His voice cracked.
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then answered with complete honesty.
"No."
"I trusted you to care enough about our marriage to read documents before signing them."
Celeste backed away slowly.
Something finally clicked inside her mind.
She looked around the enormous hall.
The paintings.
The antique furniture.
The imported marble.
Everything she believed belonged to Nathan...
Actually belonged to me.
She had spent two years treating me like a servant...
Inside my own home.
"Nathan..."
Her voice trembled.
"We should leave."
He ignored her.
Instead, he walked toward me.
Slowly.
Almost desperately.
"Evelyn..."
"It doesn't have to end like this."
I said nothing.
He reached for my hand.
"I was angry."
"It got out of control."
"I'm sorry."
For the first time in years...
He apologized.
Not because he understood my pain.
Because he understood his own.
My father stepped between us.
"You aren't sorry you hurt her."
Nathan glared at him.
"You don't know me."
"I know enough."
He nodded toward the television.
"I watched a man strike his wife two hundred times."
"I watched him stop only because another woman reminded him he'd missed two."
He paused.
"That isn't anger."
"That's character."
Nathan's shoulders slumped.
His confidence had vanished.
"So..."
"What happens now?"
Mr. Brooks answered before anyone else could.
"The acquisition becomes effective at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
"You'll be removed as CEO."
"Your executive access will be revoked."
"Every corporate account under your authority has already been frozen pending investigation."
Nathan whispered,
"Investigation?"
As if on cue...
Blue and red lights flashed through the mansion windows.
Police vehicles rolled up the driveway.
This time...
They hadn't been called by Nathan.
The front doors opened again.
Detectives entered alongside agents from the Financial Crimes Task Force.
Their lead investigator approached my father respectfully.
"Chairman Hawthorne."
"We have the warrants."
Nathan's heartbeat seemed visible beneath his collar.
"Warrants?"
The detective unfolded a thick packet.
"Nathan Ashford."
"You are under investigation for aggravated domestic assault, corporate fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, tax evasion, and financial misconduct."
Another agent turned toward Celeste.
"Celeste Monroe."
"You are also under investigation for conspiracy, embezzlement, money laundering, and obstruction of justice."
Celeste's face turned white.
"This is insane!"
she shouted.
"You have no proof of financial crimes!"
The lead investigator smiled faintly.
"Oh..."
"We haven't shown you the interesting evidence yet."
He nodded toward me.
"Mrs. Ashford."
"The files."
I walked to the grand piano.
Reached beneath the lower panel.
And removed a slim black hard drive.
Nathan stared.
His mouth slowly opened.
"You..."
I met his eyes.
"I told you six months ago..."
"...I had started practicing the piano again."
He remembered.
He had laughed.
Because I could barely play a simple melody.
He never once wondered...
Why I spent hours sitting at the piano every evening.
I hadn't been practicing.
I had been hiding evidence.
The investigator accepted the drive.
"Our forensic team has already verified the contents."
Nathan whispered,
"What did you give them?"
I answered quietly.
"Every offshore account."
"Every fake invoice."
"Every shell company."
"Every payment you and Celeste thought no one would ever find."
Celeste stumbled backward.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"No..."
I looked at her one final time.
"You were right about one thing."
She blinked.
"I was quiet."
I smiled for the first time that night.
"But quiet women..."
"...hear everything."
Before either of them could respond, one of the FBI agents' phones rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then looked at my father with an expression of genuine surprise.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"The international banking task force just confirmed something."
Everyone waited.
The agent slowly turned toward Nathan.
"The money wasn't stolen from Hawthorne Holdings."
Nathan frowned.
"Then from where?"
The agent swallowed.
"It was taken..."
"...from a classified government infrastructure fund."
The room fell completely silent.
May you like
What Nathan believed was corporate fraud...
Had just become a matter of national security.
