Chapter 18 – The Librarian

No one spoke.

William's final note lay in the center of the study.

The Librarian knows who ordered Michael and Sarah Grace to die...

And it wasn't Alexander Vaughn.

Director Collins broke the silence.

"If that's true..."

"...then we've been hunting the wrong man."

Victoria slowly shook her head.

"No."

"Alexander is guilty."

"But perhaps..."

"...he wasn't the one who gave the original order."

Nathan frowned.

"Then who did?"

No one had an answer.

Trinity, Vermont

Six hours later...

A federal convoy climbed the winding roads leading into the Green Mountains.

The small town of Trinity looked untouched by time.

Brick storefronts.

White church steeples.

Maple trees lining quiet streets.

Children rode bicycles past old Victorian homes.

It was the last place anyone would expect to hold the greatest secret in America.

At the center of town stood Trinity Public Library.

A beautiful gray-stone building with stained-glass windows and ivy climbing its walls.

An elderly woman was placing books on a display table as they entered.

She smiled warmly.

"Good afternoon."

"Welcome to Trinity."

Nothing about her suggested danger.

Or conspiracy.

Or decades of secrets.

Director Collins approached.

"We're looking for the Librarian."

The woman smiled.

"Aren't we all?"

Nathan sighed.

"We don't have time for riddles."

The woman looked at him over her glasses.

"Neither did your wife."

Everyone fell silent.

She knew who I was.

Margaret Ellis

"I've been expecting you, Evelyn."

She extended her hand.

"My name is Margaret Ellis."

I shook it.

Her grip was surprisingly firm.

"You know me?"

"I knew your parents."

The words stole the air from my lungs.

Margaret locked the library's front doors.

Closed the curtains.

Then walked toward an enormous bookshelf near the back wall.

She removed an old leather-bound copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.

The entire bookshelf slid aside.

A hidden staircase descended beneath the library.

Nathan whispered,

"I knew it..."

"It really was a vault."

Margaret smiled.

"No."

"It was always a library."

The Archive

The underground chamber stretched farther than anyone imagined.

Thousands of shelves.

Rows of climate-controlled cabinets.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Film reels.

Audio tapes.

Computers.

Every shelf carefully labeled.

Not by subject.

By year.

Director Collins looked around in disbelief.

    "What is all this?"

    Margaret answered simply.

    "The truth."

    She turned toward me.

    "Michael and Sarah trusted me."

"They knew someone had to preserve the evidence."

    Victoria whispered,

    "So you became the Librarian."

    Margaret nodded.

    "I never chose the title."

    "They gave it to me."

    The Original Ledger

Margaret walked to a steel cabinet.

    She unlocked three separate locks.

Then placed her hand against a biometric scanner.

    Finally...

She removed a single black ledger.

    Unlike every copy we'd seen...

    This one looked ancient.

Its leather cover was cracked with age.

Across the front were embossed two simple words.

    Original Record

Director Collins almost held his breath.

    "The real ledger..."

    Margaret nodded.

    "The only one."

    Nathan stared.

    "So everything William risked..."

    "...was for that book?"

    Margaret looked at him.

    "No."

    "He risked everything..."

    "...for the names inside."

She carefully opened the first page.

    Every entry was handwritten.

    Dates.

    Payments.

    Orders.

    Political contributions.

    Assassinations.

    Bribes.

    Illegal operations.

    Each linked to a signature.

    Director Collins whispered,

    "My God..."

    "This isn't just Project Phoenix."

    "It's forty years of corruption."

    Michael Grace's Final Entry

Margaret turned to the final section.

A page marked with a faded blue ribbon.

    She looked at me.

    "Your father wrote this."

    I stepped forward.

The handwriting matched the letters from Locker 317.

    At the top...

    A title.

    If We Do Not Return

    Below it...

    Michael Grace had written:

Alexander Vaughn believes he leads Project Phoenix.

    He is mistaken.

    The room became completely silent.

    I continued reading.

The true founder never appears in meetings.

    Never signs documents.

    Never accepts recognition.

    Nathan whispered,

    "Who is it?"

    I turned the page.

    The final sentence was underlined.

    His codename is—

    The rest of the page...

    Had been burned away.

    Too Late

    Margaret stared in horror.

    "No..."

She carefully turned the page over.

Half the final entry was missing.

    Someone had deliberately removed it.

    "When?"

    Director Collins asked.

    Margaret's hands trembled.

    "Impossible."

"I inspected this ledger last week."

    "It was complete."

    Victoria looked around the archive.

    "Someone's been here."

    The room instantly changed.

FBI agents spread through the underground vault.

    Every exit secured.

    Every shelf searched.

One young agent shouted from the back of the archive.

    "Director!"

    Everyone rushed toward him.

A hidden door stood slightly open.

Fresh footprints marked the dust-covered floor.

    Director Collins touched one print.

    Still damp.

    "They're recent."

    Nathan whispered,

    "We're not alone."

    The Recording

    Inside the hidden room...

    They found a tape recorder.

    Still running.

    Margaret stared.

"I've never seen this room opened."

    The recording suddenly played.

Alexander Vaughn's voice filled the chamber.

    "If you're hearing this..."

    "...then you've reached the archive."

    He laughed quietly.

    "Congratulations."

    "But as usual..."

    "...you're one step behind."

    Victoria frowned.

    "This was recorded recently."

    Alexander continued.

"I didn't steal the missing page."

    Silence.

    "Because I burned it..."

    "...thirty-two years ago."

    Nathan looked confused.

    "Why admit that?"

    Margaret's expression darkened.

"Because he wants us chasing the wrong truth."

    The Final Shelf

Before anyone could discuss it further...

A loud crash echoed from the far end of the archive.

    Books toppled from a shelf.

    Agents rushed toward the sound.

    Behind the collapsed shelving...

A narrow stone chamber became visible.

Unlike the rest of the archive...

    It contained only one object.

    An old wooden cradle.

    Covered by a white blanket.

    I slowly walked toward it.

    My heart pounded.

    Inside the cradle...

    There wasn't a child.

    Only a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in my biological mother's handwriting, were seven words.

For Evelyn, If You Ever Find Home.

My hands shook as I opened it.

    Inside...

    A photograph.

    My parents.

    William.

    Victoria.

    And...

    Another man.

His face had been carefully cut out of the picture with a razor blade.

On the back, my mother's handwriting read:

    The man we erased...

...was the one we feared most.

    Before anyone could react—

A single sniper shot shattered the library's stained-glass window above.

    Glass exploded across the archive.

    An FBI agent shouted:

    "Incoming!"

    Then another shot rang out.

This one wasn't aimed at us.

    It struck the Original Ledger.

The bullet tore through the leather cover—

And flames instantly erupted across the ancient pages.

    May you like

Someone outside wasn't trying to kill us.

They were trying to erase history forever.
