Chapter 16 – A Father for a Father

For three full seconds...

No one moved.

The words echoed inside my head.

They kidnapped William Hawthorne.

"Dad..."

The wooden box slipped from my hands, crashing onto the marble floor of the locker corridor. Letters scattered in every direction.

Director Collins was already shouting into his radio.

"Lock down every tunnel!"

"Seal every bridge leaving Manhattan!"

"Air support, track that SUV!"

Static answered him.

Then a strained voice.

"Negative!"

"They switched vehicles inside the Park Avenue tunnel!"

"We've lost visual!"

Collins slammed his fist against the locker.

"Damn it."

Nathan stared toward the station entrance.

"They planned every second."

Victoria nodded grimly.

"Alexander never attacks the objective."

"He attacks the response."

The FBI analysts' phones erupted with alerts.

One agent looked up.

"Our communications network has been hacked."

Another shouted,

"Traffic cameras are offline."

A third added,

"Someone is feeding us false GPS locations."

Within minutes...

The largest manhunt in New York had become blind.

The Letter

I knelt to gather my parents' scattered letters.

One envelope had landed several feet away.

Unlike the others...

It carried a red wax seal.

Across the front were only five handwritten words.

Open only if separated.

Victoria's expression changed.

"Evelyn."

"Open it."

My fingers trembled as I broke the seal.

Inside rested a single folded page.

My father's handwriting.

Not William's.

My biological father's.

If they have taken the man who raised you...

Do not trade yourself for him.

William will never forgive you if you do.

He always believed your life mattered more than his own.

Trust Victoria.

Never trust appearances.

And remember this sentence:

'The second father tells the first truth.'

I read the last line three times.

It made no sense.

Nathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria slowly closed her eyes.

"Oh no..."

She whispered.

"He remembered."

A Forgotten Code

Director Collins looked confused.

"Remembered what?"

Victoria took the letter from my hands.

"This wasn't written for Evelyn."

She pointed to the final sentence.

"It was written for William."

"How do you know?"

"Because that's one of our emergency recognition codes."

Silence.

William and my biological father...

Had created secret phrases decades earlier.

If one of them disappeared...

The other would know exactly what to do.

Nathan looked around.

"So..."

"What does it mean?"

Victoria answered quietly.

"It means William left us something."

Blackthorn Manor

We returned to the mansion within the hour.

Federal agents had already begun searching William's private study.

Every drawer.

Every bookshelf.

Every painting.

Nothing.

Director Collins shook his head.

"He didn't leave anything."

Victoria wasn't convinced.

"He always prepared for the worst."

She walked slowly around the room.

Looking.

Remembering.

Then...

She stopped in front of the old grandfather clock.

She smiled faintly.

"Of course."

William had wound that clock every Sunday afternoon.

For thirty years.

Even after hiring staff.

He always insisted on doing it himself.

Victoria reached behind the pendulum.

Pressed against a hidden latch.

Click.

A narrow compartment slid open.

Inside rested...

A leather notebook.

And another brass key.

The notebook bore a title.

If Alexander Wins

No one spoke.

Victoria handed it to me.

"You should read."

William's Last Plan

I opened the first page.

My father's handwriting was calm.

Precise.

If you're reading this, then I failed to stop my brother.

Do not waste time looking for me.

Alexander wants exactly that.

Instead...

Find the Ledger.

I turned another page.

Everything depends on the Ledger.

Another.

Adrian doesn't want the Ledger destroyed.

Alexander wants it hidden forever.

Another.

Inside it is the only proof linking Project Phoenix to the people who still control it today.

Director Collins looked up.

"The Black Ledger."

Victoria nodded.

"So that's what Alexander has been after."

Nathan frowned.

"I thought we already found it."

Victoria slowly shook her head.

"No."

"The files in the bunker were copies."

She pointed toward William's notebook.

"The original still exists."

The Name

I continued reading.

Halfway through the notebook...

William had underlined one sentence twice.

Never search for the Ledger.

Search for the librarian.

Nathan blinked.

"Librarian?"

The intelligence analyst immediately began searching every recovered file.

Two minutes later...

"I found something."

Everyone gathered around.

Dozens of intercepted messages referred to someone using a codename.

The Librarian.

No photograph.

No identity.

Only one note.

Keeper of the Original Ledger.

Director Collins frowned.

"So who is this Librarian?"

No one answered.

Then...

Derek quietly spoke from the doorway.

"I know."

Everyone turned.

"You do?"

He nodded.

"I met the Librarian once."

"When?"

"Twenty years ago."

"Who is it?"

Derek hesitated.

Then finally answered.

"It's not a person."

Silence.

"What?"

"It's a place."

Trinity Library

Derek unfolded an old map.

Pointing toward northern Vermont.

"There."

A tiny mountain town.

Population fewer than three thousand.

At its center...

A century-old stone building.

Trinity Public Library.

Nathan laughed once.

"A library?"

Derek looked at him.

"That's exactly why no one would search there."

Victoria suddenly remembered something.

"William donated millions to restore that library."

Director Collins looked at her.

"When?"

"Twenty-one years ago."

The room became quiet.

William hadn't restored a library.

He had built a vault.

Alexander's Message

Before anyone could prepare the journey—

Every light flickered.

The study television switched on by itself.

Alexander appeared again.

He looked amused.

Holding a cup of tea.

William sat quietly beside him.

Alive.

Unharmed.

But handcuffed.

Alexander smiled directly into the camera.

"Evelyn."

"You've been busy."

I stepped closer.

"If you hurt him—"

Alexander interrupted gently.

"I haven't."

"He and I have forty years of unfinished conversations."

William met my eyes.

His expression remained calm.

Then...

Almost imperceptibly...

He tapped his fingers against the armrest.

Twice.

Pause.

Once.

Twice.

Victoria gasped.

"It's Morse code."

The FBI analyst translated rapidly.

Three words appeared on his laptop.

Don't trust Adrian.

Alexander smiled wider.

"As always..."

"...my brother never could stop sending secret messages."

He leaned toward William.

"I suppose it's time she learns the final truth."

William stared back without fear.

"No."

Alexander looked at the camera.

"Oh yes."

He smiled.

"Because the man Evelyn calls Father..."

"...isn't the only one who's been lying."

The transmission ended.

Silence filled the study.

No one spoke.

Then Victoria whispered something that made every person in the room freeze.

May you like

"If Alexander tells her first..."

"...she may never forgive William."
