Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Patriarch

Z

The air inside the grand boardroom of Northbridge Holdings on the 42nd floor of the Michigan Avenue skyscraper was thick with tension. The massive oak table, which had once hosted my father’s triumphant corporate victories, was now surrounded by eleven nervous board members, three corporate defense attorneys, and a team of forensic accountants I had personally brought in from New York.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, serving as interim chairman. His face was lined with exhaustion. The media circus outside the building was growing larger by the hour, with news helicopters circling the tower and reporters crowding the street level.

"Emma," Arthur began, clearing his throat and adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. "The board is in absolute shock over the events of the last twenty-four hours. What happened at the funeral... the arrests... it’s an unprecedented disaster for the company's brand. Our stock price has fallen eighteen percent since the market opened this morning."

"The stock price will recover, Arthur," I said coldly, adjusting the cuffs of my tailored black blazer. "The integrity of this institution, however, will not—unless we purge every trace of corruption immediately."

"We understand your anger," spoke up Victoria Sterling, a senior board member and long-time socialite who had close ties to Vanessa. "But Daniel was the Chief Financial Officer, and Vanessa was the face of our charitable division. The public perceives this as a family feud gone nuclear. Julian Thorne, their legal counsel, just held a press conference on the courthouse steps."

I tapped my tablet, casting Thorne’s live press conference onto the massive display screen at the front of the boardroom.

On screen, Julian Thorne—a sleek, silver-haired attorney in a three-piece suit—stood surrounded by microphones.

"My clients, Daniel Grayson and Vanessa Reed, are the victims of a calculated, malicious smear campaign orchestrated by Mrs. Emma Grayson," Thorne proclaimed smoothly into the microphones. "Mrs. Grayson has long struggled with severe psychological distress regarding her inability to conceive, leading to an unhealthy obsession with her late niece. Furthermore, we have evidence indicating that the financial irregularities within Northbridge Relief were actually executed by Emma Grayson herself in a desperate bid to frame her husband and sister after discovering an alleged marital infidelity."

A wave of angry gasps rippled through our boardroom.

"That arrogant son of a bitch," Clara muttered beside me.

I didn't flinch. I had expected Thorne to play dirty. In high-stakes corporate warfare, when the facts are against you, you attack the victim’s sanity.

"Let him talk," I said quietly to the board. "Public statements made by defense counsel can be used as evidence of malicious intent during civil proceedings."

"Emma," Arthur said, leaning forward, his tone cautious. "Thorne also hinted at something else. He mentioned 'Project Lazarus.' He claimed that if this case goes to trial, documents regarding your father’s original funding sources for Northbridge Holdings will be unsealed."

The room went dead quiet.

'Project Lazarus' was a ghost from twenty years ago. It was the original investment venture that allowed my father, Richard Reed, to build Northbridge Holdings from a small freight company into a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate. There had always been rumors that my father had accepted capital from questionable sources—specifically, an offshore investment cartel connected to disgraced European financier Victor Vance.

I looked directly at Arthur. "My father is not on trial here, Arthur. Daniel and Vanessa are."

"If those historical documents are subpoenaed, Emma," Victoria Sterling interrupted sharpely, "the federal government could freeze all assets tied to Northbridge Holdings—including the board’s equity shares. We cannot allow that to happen. The board is considering recommending a settlement."

"A settlement?" I stood up, slamming my hands on the mahogany table. The sudden violence of the action made several board members flinch. "They embezzled millions from sick children! They let my niece die while they were lying on a beach! And you want to offer them a settlement to protect your stock options?"

"We have a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders, Emma!" Victoria shot back. "You hold fifty-one percent of the voting shares, but the board retains the right to strip executive authority during an active federal investigation!"

"Then try it," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper. I stepped toward Victoria, leaning over her chair. "Try to strip my authority, Victoria. And I will personally release the internal audit logs showing that you accepted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar 'consulting fee' from Vanessa’s fake charity foundation last Christmas to fund your ski chalet in Aspen."

Victoria’s face drained of all color. She snapped her mouth shut and sank back into her seat, looking away.

The rest of the board sat paralyzed. They had spent years viewing me as the meek, quiet daughter who stayed home to manage the paperwork while my father and sister ran the show. They had forgotten that I was the one who built the internal auditing systems that monitored their every move.

"Here is what is going to happen," I said, scanning the table with an iron gaze. "By five o'clock today, the board will issue a formal statement fully endorsing the criminal prosecution of Daniel Grayson and Vanessa Reed. You will fire Daniel from his position as CFO for cause, terminating his severance package and revoking his stock options. You will dissolve the current board of Northbridge Relief and surrender all financial records to the FBI."

"And if we refuse?" Arthur asked softly, though his eyes showed he already knew the answer.

"If you refuse," I replied, pulling my briefcase off the floor, "I will trigger a majority shareholder buyout, dissolve the entire board of directors by nightfall, and release every single compliance violation sitting in my personal safe. Do I make myself clear?"

No one spoke. No one dared to raise a hand in opposition.

"Good," I said, snapping my briefcase shut. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a meeting with the District Attorney."

I walked out of the boardroom, the heavy double doors clicking shut behind me. But as I stepped into the elevator, my phone buzzed with an encrypted text message from an unknown number.

May you like

“You think you’re hunting them, Emma. But you’re digging up a grave that was meant for you. Look into your father's vault at First National. Ask why Sofia’s blood type didn't match Daniel’s.”

My breath hitched in my throat. The elevator descended in total silence, the terrifying words burning into my mind.
