Chapter 7 - The Dragon's Den

The text message from Victor Vance was a declaration of war.

For two days, the city had been in a state of shock. Daniel was held without bail in a federal detention center, facing up to forty years in prison under the RICO indictment. Vanessa, still trapped in county lockup, had suffered a complete psychological breakdown after learning that her personal assets, offshore accounts, and luxury properties had been seized by the federal government.

reign of terror over my life was ending, but the shadow behind them—Victor Vance—was finally stepping into the light.

At 8:00 PM on Friday evening, a sleek black limousine pulled up outside my estate. A uniformed driver stepped out and handed me an embossed black envelope.

Inside was a single card:

Dinner at The Penthouse, The Drake Hotel. 9:00 PM. Come alone, Emma, or the public will learn about your father's true cause of death.*

My heart stopped. My father had died four years ago from a sudden heart attack—or so I had been told. The medical examiner had signed off on natural causes without an autopsy at Vanessa's insistence.

I looked at the driver. "Tell him I'll be there."

An hour later, I was riding the private express elevator to the penthouse suite of The Drake Hotel overlooking Lake Michigan. The elevator doors opened directly into a sprawling, opulent penthouse filled with priceless artwork, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and a long dining table set for two.

Sitting at the end of the table was Victor Vance.

He was a man in his late sixties, with steel-grey hair, razor-sharp blue eyes, and a tailored suit that whispered power and absolute control. Despite his age, he radiated a dangerous, predatory energy that filled the entire room.

"Emma," Victor said, his voice deep, cultured, and devoid of warmth. He gestured to the empty chair across from him. "Please, sit. The white truffle risotto is exquisite."

I remained standing near the elevator, holding my purse tightly against my side. "I didn't come here to eat, Vance. I came to finish this."

Victor chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of red wine. "You are so much like your father. Rigid. Principled. Entirely blind to how the world actually operates."

"My father was a better man than you will ever be," I said coldly.

"Is that what you believe?" Victor raised an eyebrow, picking up a silver napkin and dabs his lips. "Your father was a desperate businessman who borrowed fifty million dollars from my syndicate when his company was failing. When he couldn't pay it back, he offered me something far more valuable: total financial control over Northbridge Holdings."

"And Sofia?" I asked, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You turned a child into a collateral agreement?"

Victor’s face remained completely stone-cold. "Sofia was an investment. A genetic key to ensure that the Reed family bloodline remained bound to my financial interests. Vanessa was more than happy to facilitate the arrangement in exchange for unlimited access to my offshore funding networks."

"You monster," I whispered.

"Monster?" Victor smiled faintly. "I am a businessman, Emma. I build empires. Vanessa and Daniel were greedy, foolish children who lacked discipline. They used my resources for cheap thrills, jewelry, and luxury vacations. They brought the FBI to my doorstep because they couldn't manage a simple domestic cover-up."

"They're going to prison for the rest of their lives," I said. "And so are you. The ledger from my father's safe is already in the hands of the Department of Justice."

Victor slowly set his wine glass down. The gentle clink of glass against crystal sounded like a gun cocking in the quiet room.

"Do you really think a few pages of numbers can touch me, Emma?" Victor asked, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "The Department of Justice answers to politicians whose campaigns I finance. The judges who hear these cases sit on boards of companies I own. You brought a knife to a nuclear war."

"I didn't bring a knife, Victor," I said calmly.

I reached into my bag, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen twice.

Suddenly, the massive television screen mounted on the penthouse wall flickered to life. A live news broadcast from CNBC began playing.

"Breaking news," the news anchor announced. "The Securities and Exchange Commission, in coordination with Interpol, has just executed a global freeze on all assets tied to Vance International Financial Group following an unprecedented leak of over forty terabytes of encrypted banking data..."

Victor’s calm mask shattered instantly. He stood up, his chair scraping violently against the hardwood floor. "What did you do?!"

"The flash drive in my father's vault didn't just contain financial records," I said, stepping closer to him, looking straight into his furious eyes. "It contained the private encryption keys to your primary server network in Zurich. While you were sitting here waiting to intimidate me, my team of forensic analysts transferred the entire system archive directly to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and the SEC."

Victor’s face flushed red with unbridled rage. He reached toward his jacket, but before he could move, the double doors of the penthouse were slammed open.

Six federal agents, accompanied by Interpol officers, stormed the penthouse with drawn weapons.

"Victor Vance!" the lead agent shouted. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, murder for hire, and extortion!"

Victor stood paralyzed as the officers closed in on him, grabbing his arms and forcing him against the glass window overlooking the city lights.

As they handcuffed him, Victor glared at me with pure venom. "You've destroyed everything! Northbridge Holdings will collapse! Your family name is ruined!"

I looked at him with an icy, calm smile. "The family name was ruined the day you touched it, Victor. I'm just taking out the trash."
